Old Hood Liner Adhesive Removal

I have a new hood liner for my '64 MGB and clear instructions on how to install it. The hood is missing one of the two liner panels. Old adhesive is still stuck to the hood where the missing panel was; and of course, the remaining old liner panel is still stuck to the hood. The hood has been painted a different color from original so I know the panels and adhesive that are on there are not original.

What products and process (or information source for this) can y'all recommend for removal of the old adhesive? The old adhesive must be removed in order for the new one to stick, but I don't want to damage the paint is I can help it.

Thanks.

Jim

"Mineral Spirits" would be my suggestion. Paper towels or old T-shirt, keep the old adhesive dampened with it. Anything more volatile may attack the paint.

Yep, lacquer thinner or mineral spirits.

There is a product on the market called Bestine. It is specifically designed to remove adhesives like rubber (contact) cement. I found out that it is a chemical called Heptane but marketed under the name Bestine (cost you more to buy the brand name. You can get a gallon of Heptane for under $10 from Home Depot. It is not as stinky or volatile as Lacquer thinner and will not ruin paint if you are bit messy with it. I use it everyday at my shop and don't know how I could ever make signs without it.

Here's the finished product. Mineral Spirits worked well, along with some focused labor. Thanks for your advice.

That's a loincloth.

Actually, I had to cover the license plate. The reflection in the flash was fooling by camera and underexposing everything else in the frame..
