GT6 GT6 Luggage Floor Panel Thickness

Hi Gents,
Anyone out there with a 67-69 GT6 Mk1 or Mk2 with the original luggage floor panels? I believe they were a hardboard (like a masonite)and certainly not a plywood, painted flat black. The question is 1/4" or 1/2" thickness. I'm concerned that 1/4" may not have enough rigidity.

Can anyone help?

Regards,
Jeff

I know they're not 1/2" thick. I'll measure tomorrow and let you know - my guess, 1/4".

I get about .35" from a parts car in the yard, but I'll be curious to see measurements from those whose original boards might have been better protected from the elements over the years!

Edit: By the way, I used my new HF digital calipers to take the measurement.

I just went out to the garage and measured the thickness of an original TR6 floor panel and it measures .25"

edit: By the way, I used calipers to take the measurement.

Well, that's what I'm a bit worried about, Don! Actually, I'd have measured the "good" car, but it's too deep in the cold, dark barn to get to it tonight!
Andy, your concern on Don's comment may be correct. That .10" may have been "swellness". Although my caliper isn't digital, the masonite (or whatever Triumph would have called it) was dead on at .25" thickness.

My near mint set from a '69 or '70 GT6+ measured 5/16" with a tape and appears to be of plywood construction. It is definitely not a "masonite" board and has the look and feel of plywood, finished in black and consisting of three layers and having what appear to be factory installed "grommets" and a couple of felt pads and finished finger hole for pulling it up. Digital caliper must have gotten too cold for the battery in the garage and first read .25 but was then all over the scale from .125 to .325. I'm claiming 5/16" even if swellness is involved.

Definitely not plywood on my 68 GT6. Looks like hardboard.

Thanks Men.

1/4 inch it is. I'll look for a nice birch veneer ply to spray flat black. Meanwhile, stay tuned for a stumper of a question regarding the luggage angle assembly and support!

Thanks,
Jeff

Look for baltic birch if you're using plywood. BB is solid core, no voids.

BTW I have two 3x3 pieces of what looks to be close to the original masonite. It's actually green and was used to crate my wood furnace from Canada. I plan to use one to make a new trunk board for my 4A.

If I didn't have this, I too would use ply with a wood sealer first then I would roll on black with one of the little smooth rollers.

...and, as it turns out, the one I measured indeed was "swell[ed]" (ok, swollen)! Sorry 'bout that! I got a chance last night to measure the board in my '70, and that came right in at .25" on the digital caliper! Apologies for any and all confusion stemming from my previous comments (unless the early boards were thicker, but I kinda doubt that)!

Hey Andy and JOhn B (and anyone else with an original GT6 Mk1),

I envy your guys with original cars...you have all the answers. Two more questions regarding the luggage floor arrangement. Up front of the luggage floor is a luggage angle support bar ("L" shaped), supported buy a short verticle support. Canley Classics shows it with the "L" pointing downward toward the floor. My PO had it installed with the "L" up, creating a lip to catch luggage that shifted forward? Up or down if you know? I tend to trust Canley. SEcondarily, is it your opinion this piece and the short vertical were always trimmed in black vinyl, irrespective of carpet, panel, and seat cover? I'm assuming these pieces were not custom trimmed to match a matador red carpet and seats, for example. I assume they were always black like the door capping strip?

Many thanks guys,
Jeff

Here are some shots of mine - KC13000L. Have seen a number of other Mk1's that look the same as this.
