Fair price?

I've come across a 1973 TR-6 with o/d in SC that needs restoration but is complete and fairly solid. Needs restoration means it runs but needs everything (minor rust repair, interior, dash refinish, paint, etc.). The owner wants $1750. Is that reasonable?

Thanks!

billh1963, Go get it, you can sell the overdrive for about that, just be prepared to spend some big bucks if you want to go for the perfect car. Wayne in Salisbury.

Remember, there is no such thing as minor rust repair. But, at that price, I concur, go for it!

Jump on that one if it has not been wrecked, or has serious frame damage.

Repeat of the above sentiments. Just realize there is no such thing as a partial restoration. Once you get into the project you'll experience "mission-creep" and decide to do more and more. But its well worth it. So long as the frame is solid and the rust is manageable you should go for it.

Get it.

As far as scope creep goes, I bought a pretty good example of a TR6 with little to no rust with the though of driving the heck out of it as was. NOW......New brakes, master cylinder, brake servo, heater motor, dash board, electric fan, rebuilt motor with a hotter cam and compression, triple carbs, headers, exhaust, rebuilt distributor, rebuilt transmission, new rear hubs, differential, half-shafts, verticle link, springs, bushings, front rotors, wheels and tires, various wiring fixes and upgrades, AND countless hours cursing.... I'm sorta done. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Yeah, I'd investigate that one with cash in pocket. As long as the frame is solid and the sheet metal isn't to far gone that seems like a great price. Make sure you look to see if the OD unit is actually there, don't just go on what the VIN and the owner say. Don't even go on the presence of the column switch alone, get under the car and take a peek if having the OD is important to you. Many transmissions have been swapped out over the years with non-OD units. However, at that price I think even if it wasn't present I'd still get the car, but you might be able to talk him down a few hundred more if it's absent.

Good luck.

He is correct. Look under the car for the correct unit. (You should be under there looking for rust anywway.) My TR250 had an OD in it when the previous owner bought the car. It stopped working, and he took it out and it now has a four speed. He kept the trans, which is now all apart. Anyway, I got the BMH certificate for my car and it did not come with OD from the factory. Now I have an extra trans that needs rebuilding... /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/england.gif

Get it if it checks out OK. If the engine runs, as you say, see if the OD works.

If you don't get it, let me know where it is. I live in SC.
