Engine pulling question - where connect

Guys - where do you connect the chain to the engine when you are pulling a motor? I've successfully done this before on a MGB engine, but haven't pulled a TR motor before.

Any pics?

Thanks!

To the 2 engine hoist pieces on the motor.

Sometimes the rear lifting eye has been removed, it was on my car. I just removed and replaced one of the head bolt nuts at the rear of the head inserting 2 heavy duty washers with the chain sandwiched in between. Worked great.

Earlier TRs (like my TR3/A) did not have lifting eyes from the factory. I generally just stick a chain link under a head nut, front & rear (one on each side for reasonable balance).

Adding the lift eyes is another option, but note that the studs were made longer to accommodate the extra thickness.

Hey Tom,

Not sure if you were asking about the 6 or 3 so I thought I would post both.

On the 6, I used the stock attachment point at the rear of the engine where the ground strap is. If you look at the second pic, you can see the pick up point I used for the front. I always thought that this was a stock piece but after attending a TRials, I was told it wasn't. You could always use the head stud instead.

On the 3, I had two pick up points that I assume(d) were stock. You can see them in the pics below.

Did this 10 years ago. You will notice that we were able to pull the engine and transmission together. With the correct equipment, this is not a bad job. The load leveler gizmo (not sure what these are called) is a must for pulling the engine with the trans because of the extreme angle required. I did this job before I owned an engine hoist. I had to jerry-rig a chain fall and temporary A-frame. With the trans it's a heavy load, beyond the 2x8 rafters in my garage!

Surely does make the job easier. Yet I have gotten by with just a hook on the hoist and a chain that would slip through the hook; plus a couple of big tapered drifts (punches) to lever the chain through the hook and lock it in place.

The hoist was a simple cable puller (aka "come along"), linked to a braced rafter in the garage. Well, actually I used the rafter without bracing several times, until it broke. After that, I decided the bracing was required

Necessity is a mother, and all that.

I have had good success with the Oberg Tilt Lift....used it several times now and wouldn't be without one now.

Thanks guys - exactly what I was looking for. And while I'm pulling a TR4 engine (out of a TR3) I'm sure it won't be long before a 6 engine has to come out as well....

I'm going to go after it on Sunday so I'll let you know how it goes.

Hey - just remembered that a local guy down here who has got 30+ years of experience connected the chain to the stems used to hold the valve cover in place. I winced but he said he's being going that for years without any problems. Sure made it easy....

(ducks for cover...)
