Dash Restoration

Any advice on a good adhesive for re-skinning the dash on a 62 3000 BT7? Remove dash from car and I have a new roll of red vinyl and just stripped off the old faded one. Metal is in great shape and need suggestions on a good adhesive. Thanks. Pete

I used 3M Super Trim Adhesive No. 08090. Bought it at either Autozone or PepBoys.

Hi John Guzman,That is a good product but it can leave tracks in vinyl cloth. I suggest that 3m's Industrial spray adhesive be used for this application.One can obtain it at local auto supply stores as well, it comes in a black rattle can.---Fwiw---Keoke

Here is a crazy dash question. Metal dash of course in a Bugeye. Ok I need to clean it up before recovering. Strip to bare metal, prime and paint then cover. What have you all found is correct? Bare metal seems not to be a good idea.

I did my BT7 25 years ago using standard hardware store contact cement. Used it on all the interior vinyl that needed to be gluded to a hard surface. Still sticking and looking good after all these years.

HI Jlaird, I think that stripping the surface to be covered to bare metal is sufficient. The back side may require painting to avoid rust.A good spray on type adhesive assures a smooth finished covering.---Fwiw--Keoke

Got ya Keoka, and yes I have used contact cement but that was some 30 years ago although it worked fine.

Hi Jack,
If it’s been 30 years…They have a new environmentally friendly contact cement that comes in a green can. I’m not so happy with that stuff. I would stick with the original red can formula. So to speak.
