Bonnet 'channel'

Where can I find a replacement channel that mounts to the firewall that holds the rubber strip the rear of the bonnet rests on?
Thanks, Rut

McGregor in Canada. He's got the one that fits. He advertises in the back of Classic Motor Sports. Someone will have his number. He doesn't respond to EMail very well but his rubber parts fit. The one from usual suspects is a PITA and does not fit well.

Jim,
I'm looking for the metal channel that holds the rubber strip and can't find it anywhere. Thoughts?
Thanks, Rut

I think Rut's talking about the channel itself, Jim, not the rubber. You are right, though, about the rubber. the stuff from the usual suspects is way to thick. Had to trim mine by almost 50% to get the bonnet even close to closing. Even then it's too short by about 3". :wall:

Edit: Rut, you beat me to it while I was typing!

Rut, check out #4 on this page . It doesn't mention whether or not it includes the channel, but it may be worth a call. Good Luck.

I'm not to the rubber replacement part yet, but will keep this in mind. There is a lot of old rust damage along the rear edge and I would like to clean it up with a new piece. Since I'm going with a front tilt I'm also trying to find a trunk style latch with inside release for the rear hold down.
Thanks, Rut

When you do get to this stage, call Mr Macgregor. I hesitated on my door seals against all advice. Wound up calling and having a nice chat as well as getting the right parts. Really pleasant guy to deal with.

I'm so dumb I have TWO that don't fit--one I bought from someplace in the UK and another from the company whose name begins with M and ends with S. :madder:

Well I guess I know where I have to order my rubber parts! Now all I need is a metal channel to put it in. I wonder if the part is even available?
Thanks, Rut

I would doubt it, unfortunatly. How did it ever come to be lost? That is not a part that needs replacing often. I imagine you could fab one that would do the job fairly easily.

Kurt.

Kurt,
It's not lost...well, I guess it's lost to the tin worm. The top edge that fits against the firewall is pretty ate up and was covered with bondo.
Thanks, Rut

I'm pretty sure that piece could be reproduced with a brake and shrinker. It might take a couple of attempts to figure out how to get a bench top shrinker to fit in that tight of a channel. Maybe a production metal fabrication shop would have a tool that could knock it out.

If the ends are there fabbing a piece that doesn't have to make much of a bend would'nt be to difficult. I've made a lot of pieces by clamping various shapes to my metal welding table and just having at it.

Kurt.

A few years ago, I made a plywood template for the shape of the channel, then found some aluminum channel and bent it to fit. Looks OK and holds the rubber fine.

https://www.frogeyespares.co.uk/CatalogueApril2011.pdf

Price list summary, page 2, part number BP042, £29.50, plus shipping of course.
It's a little steep, I would just make a copy of the one you have from 1mm steel plate. (hand formed properly of course)

Jayne at frogeyespares is quite knowledgeable regarding parts supplies for these cars. She's not one of the big suppliers and doesn't have a fabrication facility of her own. But she uses some standard outlets or has several local metal facilities produce some very high quality stuff.

It looks like it's the same that AH Spares sells, also for the same money.
