Austin A40 Convertible

Interesting. I'd never heard of an A40 Somerset convertible (the A40 Sports was Devon based). Its oddly named the A40 Somerset Coupe dispite being obviously a convertible.

The "coupe" probably refers to "drophead coupe"

I'm actually surprised at how many of these Somerset convertibles are here in Canada, I know of at least six of them in the membership roster of the British Saloon Car Club of Canada (and there must be more than that elsewhere in Canada), I don't know how common the Somerset convertible is over in England...

I have actually seen one Somerset convertible in person, near Regina, Saskatchewan, it was nearing the end of a full restoration and haven't seen it since.

Cool web page. That 59 Brookwood wagon is in awesome shape. Paint lovingly polished down to primer, no rust, no body damage.....that's what I love to see in an old car!

I'm not sure where this guy finds all this stuff, but there is piles of stuff like this sitting around on the prairies up here, he's come up with some neat British stuff sometimes... Austin A90 Atlantic, Morris Cowley pickup

Was also just chatting with a friend who was viewing pictures of the engine in the Austin A40 Somerset, he reckons it's not the original engine but still obviously an Austin engine of some sort... Anyone have any opinions? I don't know enough to give a decent opinion.

The engine Sherlock has shown looks like a regular Austin engine that was fitted to the A40, but with a strange two-barrel intake manifold. The original A40 had a 1200 cc engine related to the MGA & MGB powerplant (and used in lots of other things too). The newer engines are 1500, 1622 and 1800, so it could be one of these too....they don't look much different.
My first car was an A-40. I still think they look great in an "old Brit-saloon" sort of way. Here's mine around '67.

The engine looks original, I know of a 1949 A-40, the only difference I see is this one has dual carbs, the 1949 has a single carb.
