This bright, sunny, windy morning, wife and I drove up to Hayfields, a farm stand about 25-30 miles away on smooth, curvy back roads. Car began breaking up a bit at higher revs, especially under load. By the time we got home, it was missing at almost all speeds. I reset the points which were a bit narrow, replaced the coil and the condenser. This time it refused to start. I pulled the cap and discovered the rotor - original type - had the small flange that fits into the groove on the shaft had broken off at the bottom and the rest had gotten rounded off so that the rotor was probably slipping on the shaft. The plastic tip had not yet fallen into the distributor so I fished it out and tossed it and the rest of the rotor. I replaced the rotor with a new red one, shot some starting fluid into the cards just in case and fired it up. On the road, it ran fine, all the way up to 4500 rpm which is as high as I ever go. Problem solved. Now I'll have to order a new spare rotor. Any suggestions? Anyone else ever have that problem?
