TR6 73 TR6 ZS 175 CD-2 carb question

Ok, its been a bad couple of days. I removed the air cleaner with the intention of balancing the carbs. First thing I noticed was the 2 air values were at different heights. The air valve on the front carb was higher than the rear. Is this ok?? Then I proceeded to try and balance the carbs. I followed the steps on the tech page of Buckeye Triumphs. I was unable to get them balanced. I set the Unisyn on the front carb and then tried to get the rear to match the float level. No luck. So then I tried setting the unisyn float on the rear crab and getting the front one to match it. Still no luck. Has anyone else had this problem. Any ideas on what might be wrong or what I might be doing wrong? All help is greatly appreciated. Sure wish I knew a TR6 guru that lived near me. LOL

Oops also does anyone know if this model carb can have the mixture adjusted by using the special tool that Moss sells. All the books I look at seem to say the 73 had a ZS 175 CD-SE unless the 2 means the same as SE(second edition maybe?)

On the bottom of the carb in the middle of the float bowl you'll find something sticking out. If it's smooth, and brass then you have the adjustable needle. If you have a hex shaped protrusion then you have an adjustable jet. SE should mean something about emission controls.

As for the air valves. Was the engine running when you noticed them sitting at different heights? If not, then you may have gunk built up in the jet (round hole in the bottom of the venturi) or it's hanging up in the bore, or around the dashpot cover.

Hello Jerry,
with the engine switched off, are the pistons free to move, if you lift them do they close off when you release them?. If not they should. With the engine running and if you blip the throttle do both pistons rise, if the rear one does not then the diaphragm is damaged. (Assuming that the first check I mentioned was OK.) Also when you attempted to balance them, is the throttle linkage free, i.e. adjusting one carburettor does not drag the other with it.

OK I did some checkout and found the diaphragm had holes in it. Ordered them and will install and see what happens. Thanks guys

Jerry, the rear carb is the one to which we attach the Unisyn for balancing the carbs. It's the one nearest the firewall.

I found this out the hard way on my first try. The front carb is nearest the radiator, thre rear carb is nearest the firewall.

Easy to confuse without prior knowledge! I hope this helps, but it sounds like you've solved your problem.

Good luck!

Wouldn't you use it on both carbs?

With the linkage between the carbs disconnected you adjust them to match, though some prefer to set the rear carb a bit higher since the torque in the linkage causes the rear carb movement to lag the front carb just a little -- maybe that is what you were saying?
