Whats the push behind the MG name to make new cars?

Because there are a bunch of morons....er, make that enthusiasts, that will buy a dog turd if you attach the magic octagon to it. They want to take advantage of that, but instead of making sports cars like the S2000 or Miata, you are offered a procession of boring sedans.

A group in China bought the rights to the MG trademark some years ago and has been producing "MGs" since then. I've seen a couple of these in Europe, and they are not impressive. Just another sedan, as far as I can see.

The interesting question, though, is this: I wonder what an MG would be like if the real MG company were still around?

If the real MG company were still around it would probably be on it's fifth bankruptcy by now. They had the chance to make up to date sports cars in the good old days, but when Lotus, for instance, was making cutting edge lightweight cars, MG was still churning out relative buggy whips. There was absolutely zero evidence that they would have been able to change that situation.

I think you're probably right. Certainly, by 1980 they were totally outclassed by the Japanese cars, among others, and seemed totally unable to keep up with new styles and technology. But I was thinking that if they were still around, they'd have figured out some way to make competitive cars, and I wonder what those would be like. Probably no different from the formulaic cars available today, but still....

The British government's attempt to save their auto industry by combining MG, TR, etc was a killer. The labor troubles of the times, poor quality control, insufficient financing and internal management that seemed to have never gotten over their pre merger competition all pushed BL to insolvency. And with no new designs that captured the imagination, failure was a forgone conclusion.
