1960 Healey 3000 Seat Belts

Forum Members,

I am exploring the period correct way to install seat belts in my 1960 (59 build) BT-7 which does not have, nor ever had, any attachment points for seat belts. Todd Clarke Spares seems to have many of the parts that could duplicate the "requisite attachment points for the belts. A seat belt kit Part No. AHB9l41 is available from B.M.C. Service Ltd. for this purpose." (Section P.6 of the AH workshop manual). I am curious if anyone else has pursued this path to accurate seat belts and what they learned. Thanks in advance.

Regards,

Hello welcome in the forum Bruce,

sorry I can`t give you an answer.
But this is a very interesting question. Because I have also a BT7 without seat belts ...I don`t want attache seat belts because the car have never had seat belts. But my wife told me that she never want to drive with me, if I don`t attache seat belts.... :nonono:

Sometimes I think also on my one circuit brake system.....

Which kind of seat belts you want to fit ? On this site you can see the mounting kit.

Hi,

I've crashed once (wearing seatbelts)front-to-front against another car and have installed seatbelts during the first week in both the healeys I have bought('63 Sprite sold last year, and '54 100). The accident car we drove was a heavy early 1990s BMW 5 series. I bought 4-point detachable harnesses with eye-bolts like these: https://www.gmpracingproducts.com.au/harnesses/eye-bolts.php
Easy to remove for shows or when raising the hood.

Hi Bruce,
I'll encourage you to consider a more modern seat belt arrangement that will offer you better protection. A belt with a shoulder strap can keep your head from impacting the wheel and/or dash. I don't pay much attention to the Concours guidelines, but I seem to remember they don't deduct for safety equipment. Maybe someone here knows? In these days of inattentive and self absorbed drivers, we need all the protection we can get out of these little cars.

Hey Bruce,
Welcome. I'm doing a quasi-concours thing (concours where I can but also some updating like a spin on oil filter, etc. etc.) Anyway I have a '62 BT7 and put lap and shoulder belts in mine. I think this was offered as a dealer option by BMC? Not sure about a '60 but the interior rear side panels on mine have threaded studs for a shoulder belt attachment point, as well as indented little plates underneath the floorboard where the holes were supposed to be drilled (I had to drill through the sheet metal myself). It's been some time but I think I got the attachment hardware and belts from British Car Specialists. They seem very authentic based on what I've seen from period sources (the factory shop manual, etc.) BTW, I didn't like the color of the belt fabric so I had them re-done by Snake Oyl Products(sp?)in sort of a burgundy red that closely matches the trim color. Not sure if colored belts are period or not, I didn't care about that. I had to get the eyelet bolts locally and I painted them red to match my carpet. The whole set came out very nice. Good luck,
-Tom

For what its worth all the info for mounting the seat belts is in the factory workshop manual, and all the Bmc accessories advertised, different seat belts in the drivers manual ie the bj8 drivers manual advertises the kangol magnetic seat belt, I think it was on the last page?

cheers Andy

Hello Randy; I have a number of years of Austin/BMC Service/Technical/Parts Bulletins for the late 50's and early 60's. I have been going through them and scanning the ones pertaining to Healeys and putting them into pdf files. At present I only have 1960 completed and forwarded to John Sims for his web site [ https://www.healey6.com/bulletin.htm ] Currently I am working on 1961 and will have it done soon. Enjoy!!

PS: The seat belt bulletin on the AHCSO website was provided to the previous webmaster to post a few years ago.
