1960 Fuel Pump Issue

Im sure there is info somewhere on this forum about the stock fuel pump but i cant seem to find it. I have the stock square bodied fuel pump for my 60 3000 that doesnt work. When power is hooked up it does nothing and starts to smoke which obviously means its shorted somewhere. What should i check and is it repairable? I have taken it apart and it all looks to be in good order. Thanks.

Re: 1960 Fuek Pump Issue

The square bodied SU pump is a very nice unit and one of the most coveted as they have become more valuable then reason. Take a look at Dave DuBois’ website ( https://homepages.donobi.net/sufuelpumps/ ) for information on your pump and, if you decide not to tinker with it yourself, give him a call as he is one of the best when it comes to SU fuel pumps.

Where is the smoke emanating from when power is applied?

All the best,
Ray (64BJ8P1)

First place I would look is the contacts under the end cap. The coil is not designed for continuous duty and will smoke if the contacts don't open. The contacts can be replaced. Since it is still smoking, perhaps the coil isn't burnt out yet and can be reused.

Then I'd guess the diaphragm is deteriorated from using modern fuel. It can also be replaced.

Be sure to add a snubber diode across the contacts while you are in there (if it doesn't have one already). It does wonders for reliability, even though it makes the pump polarity-sensitive.

Verify that your 60 is either a positive ground or a negative ground. It will make a difference in your fuel pump connections. My 60 is a positive ground and I have had to ensure my fuel pump was wired to match.

Look at which way the battery is connected. If the negative terminal is connected to ground, that's negative ground.

But I don't think the original pump cared about polarity. It's the later pumps with the snubber diode (or even solid state contacts on the newest ones) that are picky about connection polarity.
