Is it necessary to remove the windshield stanchions when installing a new windshield or is it possible to prepare the new glass and frame and install the windshield with the the stanchions left in place?

I found it easier to remove the whole unit frame and stanchions and work from my bench. I would think trying to do it still attached to the car would be very difficult.

You would not be able to get to the corner finisher plates in the bottom corners to be able to remove just the w/s frame. Those hold the bottom weather strip to the stanchions, which is also attached to the w/s frame.

On top of that, you're gonna need some helpers with very steady hands to hold the windshield in place while you install those bolts. The first bolt won't be strong enough to hold by itself; and the risk is tearing up that expensive and rather fragile frame (made of solid unobtanium unless you have the even rarer aluminium version).

Don't forget, the 6 little bolts aren't the same. If you put the long ones in the top holes, there is a very real risk of breaking your new glass.

And the replacement bolts may turn out not to be it. You might need to start with the long bolts, screw them in finger tight to see how many threads too long they are, and cut the be that number of threads + a scosh.
