sport or normal mode

This is a bit of a cross posting from JAGwebworld. Basically we have been running our S-types (both 3.0 and 4.0 litre)in sport mode and finding our consumption has improved and we are having more fun with our Jaguars. Anyone here have the same experience ?

We find the opposite actually on our XJ8's, although I should add that on Sports Mode we get only a slightly less MPG average. But I personally always drive with Sports Mode activated /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

My inlaws have a 2000 S-Type 4.0, and I've logged thousands of miles in that thing. I generally throw it into sport mode as a matter of habit. The car basically gets 15-20mpg no matter what mode it's in.

Honestly, I could never find a difference between sport and normal mode. I know shift points and suspension are supposed to change, but I never seem to notice a real difference.

15-20 mpg seems awfully low in my experience. We have an average of 26mpg on our 2000 XJ8 Vanden Plas which we have put 50,000 miles on since new, and are averaging 24mpg in our 2003 XJ8 Supercharged model Vanden Plas which now has close to 6,000 miles on her. Granted I would say that around 80% of the time on both vehicles it is highway miles, but for 2 and a quarter tons of metal, it seems not bad. I would have expected the S-Type's to weigh less than the XJ8's and get better economy!

My wife and I drove the S-Type exclusively for a month or so when we returned to the Northwest in 2001 and I saw a lot of 16mpg tanks of gas. Much of it was 35-45mph zones combined with highway. We were both surprised how crappy the S's gas mileage was, especially compared to my 30mpg Corvette. (I had a '99 C5 that was lost in a flood in Houston before moving to the NW.)

I'd chalk-up poorer fuel economy to more stopping/starting/accelerating and wider tires on the S-Type.

The test period (1 week) is now over and in sport mode I am getting 26.7 mpg running to and from Shepton mallet from Andover which is half highway half B roads. Not bad! Will see next week what Jumba (Kids name for car - from lilo and stitch ) does with 80% highway.
