MGA MGA retail values

I have a friend who is REALLY jonesing for an MGA. Somehwo, my TR8 and GT6 have not dissuaded him. The first one he has looked at is a 59 DHC, drum brakes, won't start (yet), cosmetically fair, no VISIBLE rust, weak 1st gear, but complete. Asking price (at the moment) is around $8k. If this was a GT6 or Spit, I could advise him. But, I am not sure on the MGA.

Here are the questions --
1) What A's should he avoid?
2) What should a decent driver cost?
3) What should a nice CLEAN A cost?

1) What A's should he avoid?

None. The Coupe will be quite warm in the summer but they're rare and have a few unique parts compared to the roadster (e.g. external door latches, roll-up windows and that cool-ass curved 3-pcs rear window). I sold a '57 Coupe at auction back in ~1993.

The MKII is probably the most desirable, reliable A (sorry Twin Cam). The 1500 pushrod cars all have drums -kinda soft.

2) What should a decent driver cost?

Subjective. A decent, well-sorted driver without tons of bondo?? hmm, just under $10k.

3) What should a nice CLEAN A cost?

Clean and needing restoration? $3k. Some ask more for bondo-ridden cars. Sad.

A show car can fetch between $18-$40 depending on the level of restoration.

Hello, Bob. Can't say I blame your friend about lusting over MGAs, they are a truly beautiful design.

What's more, just look at the rise in MGA pricing over the past 5 years or so. Very steady rise in pricing, with little or no slow down in this el crappo economy.

Not a bad LBC for "investment", although we all know how that works . . .

I've seen two very nice local MGAs sell lately, one for $10k , the other for $12.5k. There will be a coupe and convertible for sale at Tony Barnhills estate auction in Oct. My guess is the Convertible will probably go around $5k and the Coupe $2-3K

I recall when Tony flew out to Az to buy the Coupe (lots of pics and info on the forum). He really went over the car with a fine-tooth-comb and was very pleased with the car. If someone gets the car for just what he paid for it they are getting a very good deal! Miss his inputs and now that we have an MG MGA could really use them.

Both of Tony's A's look good to me. They will, of course, need a total restoration, but are wonderful starting points. That white coupe may be the better of the two, but either one will make someone very happy. Marv's guesstimates are probably very close. Again, if I only had room...

And finances...
