Crypt Car dies in street

A creature most foul, the Crypt Car.

First time ever I have driven Crypty at night.
Dropping him off tonight at the mechanic's because
I have an early AM meeting.

No tranny cover, holes in the floor pans, stop and go
heavy traffic and Crypty locks up in second gear about
a 1/2 mile from home.

So what I smoke the clutch a bit a traffic lights?
New clutch going in next week or so.

But NOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!! Stuck in second gear
is not enough torment.

The Crypt Car's brand new clutch master cylinder
decides its time to blow a hose and dumps all the
hydraulic juice on the roadway.

As Crypty stumbles to a jerking halt in the middle
of the street----- 6 miles from home.

Wendy was and is not amused at this latest Crypt
Car stunt.

That Grady White is looking better and better to me.

a very disappointed tinster

At least it wasn't raining.

Yeah, but the black cloud over Dale's head hints that it might.

The locking up in 2nd scares me. Doesn't sound like clutch so much as gears. Or both.

good luck, I'm sure you will have it fixed in no time and you'll be back on the roads (hopefully not stuck) /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/england.gif

Dale:

Maybe just stuck in two gears at once, did you end up pulling off the shift lever? If the rods get out of sync this can happen. But the broken hose, that's a def problem.

One time in my 250 I could not get the car to go forward or backward, like it was in 2 gears at once, ugly sound, but finally freed up. Of course both times I was parked up against a wall, or parallel parked.

It hasn't occured in over a year since!

Dale:

You are a better man than me. I might just fill that thing with chum & drop if off the back of the Grady & catch some delicious Fish & Chips! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smirk.gif

This certainly not the time for lectures, but if the tranny isn't fully bolted in and the shifter rods are not in sync, there are a multitude of things that can and will go wrong.

Have it towed to your mechanic with the lift, get the clutch installed properly and put everything back together correctly before taking on the road again.

I haven't been on the board as much lately. I missed the part where the engine became a steady runner. I know this current event is annoying, but look how far you've come.

Sadly, having your LBC die on you is a right of passage. You have crossed another milestone. Remember the progress you've already made and keep the faith.

I agree with Gary H. Check the shift lever to make sure it did not slip by a shift gate. A common thing if it has a little wear and you had a little extra side pressure as you slid the lever towards third. Tends to be in two gears at the same time because it does not come out of second and engages third. Pull the lever and line the rods in neutral then reinstall the lever. Shift all the way to neutral before moving sideways to engage 3rd.

Dale you had all the bolts out of the shifter. As everybody has asked. Did you put them back??

Driving the Crypt Car last night was one of the
scariest, white knuckle adventures of my recent
life.

Stuck in second gear, heavy stop and go traffic,
many stop lights, car interior hot and filled with
exhaust fumes with no tranny cover and large holes
in the floor. And then it dies in the middle of the
road and Wendy has to rescue me.

That dreadful experience, after working on the hateful
beast almost daily for one solid year, gave me pause to
rethink my priorities. Tarpon and Snook fishing came to
mind as I was driving cross island to my early morning
meeting.

So I made a mental health stop on my way home this
afternoon. You know, just to clear my head from the
Crypt Car fiasco. Might go fishing for a spell.

Hi Dale,

I agree with others that you have come a long, long way with this car already. Sometimes it's easy to forget, when another disappointment rears it's ugly head. You'll get this one sorted out before you know it.

Yes, the possibilities of a problem inside the gearbox are good, or the shift gate as suggested.

However, the hydraulic hose blowing off might also be a clue to the problem. Perhaps it's a failed clutch release (or pressure) plate and/or release fork and/or release bearing and/or bearing carrier. I'm thinking that maybe trying to disengage a stuck clutch repeatedly simply put too much pressure on the slave cylinder. It's pretty hard to "blow out" a hydraulic system like that, unless there's some serious resistance in there somewhere.

Shift rails and gearbox faults would still allow disengaging the engine by operating the clutch. But if the clutch fails to disengage, it would also "stick in gear". So the above are the most likely faults I can think of that match both major symptoms you described.

Hope your mechanic gets to the bottom of it!
