I read that one of the crew jokes on cruise ships is:

Q. "What do you call someone who speaks three languages?"
A. Trilingual.
Q. "What do you call someone who speaks two languages?"
A. Bilingual.
Q. "What do you call someone who speaks one language?"
A. American.

For me, being monolingual is somewhat of an embarrassment. But I've been told by some of the Thai people I'd met there: "You aren't American. You don't behave like an American! Canadian, maybe."

Found that both amusing and a bit enlightening. The stereotype seems to be the predominant perception.
