xk engine

im interested, does anyone here know of any real difference between the xk engines in E's and that which came in saloons? ive always assumed it was only pistons (compression) and cams only, is this true?

Differences were in piston compression and camshaft configuration depending on what type of XK the sport models were.

The lower units were pretty much the same, except for oil pans and oil pick-ups (if we're talking 3.8 & 4.2 engines).

99.9% of all sedans before the 420 and MK10 had a bolt pattern for the intake manifold different from the XKE, so the XKE manifold won't bolt on the heads.

so are we saying the 420 has the same bolt pattern? just wondering as a 420G just showed up in a local junkyard and im planning on grabbing the engine and tranny

The 420G head is identical to the XKE. So is the lower unit except for the pan and oil pick-up as described above. The intake manifold is different than the E and the carbs have no mechanical chokes, but still very desirable. If the trans is a manual, grab it quick, as it's full syncro. If it's automatic, let it there unless you really need it. You should get the rear too, as it's probably limited slip and the pre-68 differentials are almost bulletproof. That's why they're used in high horsepower kit Cobras. All the gauges are the same as XKE too.

Maybe buy the whole thing?

i might be able to get the whole car, but the yard normally doenst allow that

I'll take everything i can as i feel for parts supplies in the future

I ahvent looked but would it be rear disk? I may make it there tomorrow
