XJ-S value....opinions requested

A friend of my father has the opportunity to buy a 1990 XJ-S coupe, perfect condition with less than 60,000 miles for around $9,000. It's an inland-Florida car. I think that it's not a bad price, but was curious if there were differing opinions. Any thoughts?

Which Engine does it have? That affects the car's value.

I would suspect that the price is a bit high. You need to take the car to a qualified Jag mechanic for a pre purchase inspection. The climate control must work, in all modes. The car must not run warm(above the N) in traffic, or on the highway. There should be a thick file of verifiable service history. And last, the seats and carpets should show no wear. A perfect XJS can bring that kind of money, but they are very few and far between. All that being said, once you drive one, they become very hard to part with. I have a couple, one V12 that I have owned from new, and a gray market 6 cylinder 5 speed cabriolet. For the money, nothing comes close in terms of enjoyment and refinement. I think that for the most part the prices have bottomed on these cars, and the neglected ones are being parted out or scrapped. It might be a good time to buy one, but really check the car out first. It is a rare jaguar that a pre purchase can't find a couple of grands worth of work that needs doing.

I agree that the price is pushing the top for a coupe. An average convertible would fit in a $9K but a coupe would be more like 6 or 7K. The 12 cylinder is a great and exotic automobile but like all 12 cylinders, it can go through $2 to 3K worth of repairs in short order. Find the wharts before you finalize the deal and then bargain. For $9k you should be getting a well maintained coupe that is in near showroom condition. Also remember that good exterior paint, interior wood and leather is expensive to replace.
