Wedge why do I do this to myself? TR8 engine rebuild

OK, I know I needed to rebuild it, it was smoking, but every step of the way I find new stuff, I got the engine out but broke the oil dip stick tube. Decided I am going to see about the getting the headers powder coated. Then I pulled the oil pan off and found metal shavings, a washer and nut. a small sqaure chunk of metal.

Looked at the cylinders, perfect.

Looked at the pistons, perfect

crank, perfect,

Any ideas where else, what else, too look?

I know I have seen oil dip stick tubes before but I do not remember who was selling them, any help on that?

Thought Woody had em but can't find them on his site

Washer and nut may be from a previous set of points. At least yours made it to the base pan. Check your distributor drive gear and corresponding camshaft gear for damage to see what may have happened with the debris on the way down. Yes, I have a story......:0)
Cheers,

I have 5 days off coming up, I plan on getting it rebuilt durng that time period. I guess with out the challenge it would not seem so worthwhile.

I have the engine torn down, no damage I can see but no idea where it came from

Bob- This is a Wedge, don't think it had points and dizzy is oil pump driven.
As he pulls it apart he'll see all this.
And when he is done he'll fly to the best coast,I mean west coast, and help me pull mine

maybe somebody else rebuilt the engine before you took it apart and didn't clean the oil passages..... I took my latest block apart and re-assembled in a day and a half.

Nope, rebuilt it myself, first attempt evee building a car engine, did it by the manual and with sseveral calls to woody. But that was ten years ago, who knows what I was thinking, back then I did it as a destraction ffom my divorce. Now I view it a my vice.

Looked all over, no damage, no where missing a nut and washer....

Will take pics tonight

Ok, I have the engine apart, I will overwhelm everyone with some photos here shortly.

I found the nut and washer were from the long bolt that comes off the crank holder (I know it is not the correct term) the and that comes thru the tin shield.

Still have not found where the small square metal peice came from.

Just curious here.
You rebuilt the engine 10 years ago; how many miles since ?
And when did the smoking start ?
Did you do a compression check to see if it was rings or perhaps just valve guides that were worn causing the smoke.

Might even have been a clogged PCV valve..

I rebuilt it ten years ago, just started smoking two yeats ago, just gradually got worse.

I had the heads checked , they are good, compression was good, all with in three pounds of each other

Found the dip stick tube at Vickies...$42 DOLLARS.... wow.. wonder what it is made of

Sure looks to me like you had dirt in there. How fastidious were you back then about keeping the inside of things clean?

Mic everything out, maybe all you need is to polish the journals and replace the bearings.

How many miles on the rebuild and how has the oil pressure been?

Scott

About 60,000 since the rebuild, oil pressure ran 15 at idle and 40 to 50 at speed
