Where's all the racers?

I know there's been plenty of racing going on....I want to here about it. Our SOVERN season opener is next weekend. What has everyone else been doing?

I am SO busy right now that there is little time to even think about racing.
We are lucky if we eat supper at home one night a week.

But my current work schedule (increased, due to two sudden retirements), is ending in three weeks and then I'll have some breathing room. Just in time for the Jefferson 500.

I know my "Joisey Boyz" friends just went to the Wild Hare at VIR and said they had a great time (the guys that went were "Smoove", "Stormy", "Donny Lightning" and "The Mayor"......I'm not sure what they call me :wink-new: )

Our Michael O. was there too. I gotta wait until I retire before I can make that one.

Anyway, I'll be at the Jeff in a few weeks. Will have a full photo report and videos.

I went to Pocono last weekend with the VSCCA.

Of course, I did have the run with my nemesis, Jim J. But I didn't know how to explain the Hatfield and McCoy background, what with the photo-shopped pictures that appeared on the internet last fall purporting to show him passing me under the "Drive Sober" sign at Lime Rock. It just didn't seem right to spend a whole edition of Victory Lane on that grudge. Jim would probably sue me for libel anyway. He denies photo-shopping those pictures. But I ask you: Why would he have a professional photographer on the hill taking pictures if he wasn't up to no good.

And then there's Eric L in the 122 Formcar. How does he pass tech? He needs to get rear view mirrors. He almost ran me off the track twice! I go to pass him and he immediately drifts over into my lane. Scares the wits out of me! The only reason that he won that race is because I was trying to stay out of his way! His tires are all pointing in different directions when he goes around a corner - he gives new meaning to the word "akimbo"!

Why the heck is Eric running Preservation Class. He's doing 1:12 laps. That poor guy, Michael M., in the 37 Bantam Special is doing something like 3 minute laps. Even if Eric doesn't win, how can he not come in first in class.

Then there was that guy in the '55 Ford Thunderbird. He has a bench seat! I'm starting from last place in the race with him right in front. As we are doing our warm up lap behind the pace car, all I could think about was "wouldn't it be cool if he could race that car with his honey snuggled up beside him?" and that led me to thoughts of "how many kids must have been conceived in that car?" So you see, it really affected my concentration.

I could tell you some other stories, like how that young girl, K., with Team Oxford thought I was in my thirties. But you'll say "In your dreams!", and I don't want to take that kind of abuse, so I'll just keep it to myself.

So then I go out and Bob K in his red Porsche starts playing with the MGs. He's just messing with us, trying to show us the best line. Too bad, were all too stupid to figure that out.

,
So you can see how I'm not really a good candidate for "posting" news about the race weekend.

Yes, I was there. See my other post about the new engine for details.

The SOVREN Spring Sprints opened the vintage racing season here in the PNW at Pacific Raceway Park in Kent, WA (Seattle) The weather was mixed with a little rain and sun which left the track very unpredictable. I was happy with the performance of #414, lowering my best lap time by 2 seconds. Unfortunately, I really didn't have anyone to race with once the Red Alfa Romeo Spider broke down that usually runs well with me. If you're unfamiliar with the track, there's a big elevation change that leads to the back straight and a lot of trees. If you go off in the back, they just cover you with dirt and plant another tree....

Enjoyed the video. Have to admit that I've never seen a track with close up trees like that and no aarmco. Sounds like your car is running well.

I'm going out again on Friday. Lime Rock. Weather is supposed to be great!

This racer is in the garage a LOT. During Saturday qualifying for the first MARRS race at Summit Point, two cars dumped major oil on the first out lap. Last car off pit lane, I hit it between 1 and 2, the zip-slap into the tire wall before I could say 'oh sh*t.' Hit LF, spinning still, then LR. Major fiberglass damage, plus sheet metal. Still won from the back on Saturday after massive application of aluminum, pop rivets & racer tape, 2nd on Sunday due to a missed shift at a crucial time. It's my first time doing major fiberglass repairs on the Midget - it's actually pretty easy to work with. Just wish I did not have to do it at all. SHould be ready for joint SARRC/MARRS at VIR weekend of 11-12 May.

We'll be at Summit for four days with the Jefferson 500 starting Thursday, May 16.

I just changed a front timing chain seal on the 1275 yesterday. Still want to flush out the old brake fluid and install the new harnesses, but otherwise, the car should be ready.

This will be my first time out in 2013 (couldn't make it to the vintage event at VIR).

We have 250 cars signed up so it'll be a busy event. Looking forward to it!

I almost signed up for the Jeff 500 (6 hour drive) but then found out I could do two weekends back to back at Limerock (40 minutes away). First is a support race for the Trans Am Memorial Day weekend and the following weekend with HRG, NY Jag Club and VSCCA. Car is about ready, did front wheel bearings, brake pads and since I had a braided clutch line let go last fall on my way to the grid, I'm changing all the braided lines, unknown age, on the brakes, this spring. It means I'll have to skip Pocono this weekend, but it looks like rain and there's not much run off there when you're on the oval sections.

I have not been able to fix the Coventry Climax 1460 in the MK IV since damaging it at the VDCA Wild Hare race last month so I will be racing the Courier for the first time since last June. I had it painted in January and am just completing installation of all new interior sheet metal so whether or not it it is fast it will be shiny!

I sell Regalia for VRG and will be set up someplace near the classroom. If you mention "BCF" you'll be eligible for a special discount so shop early and often.

Doug, Nice article in the Healey Marque about racing. Maybe I should have kept my BN4 and raced it! Your article made it sound like a lot of fun. Jerry BJ8, TR3A

Thanks Jerry -

I'm always hopping I can inspire more big Healeys to take to the vintage racing track. There's just too many Porsches and Afla's out there.

I see you're in Sacramento, I'll be competing at the Rolex Monterey Historic Reunion at Laguna Seca in August. Stop by our pits and say hi, if you can make it.

Dougie,

Nice story and photos in the Marque! I'll be joining many of these east coast boys at Lime Rock Park in 2 weeks as well as other venues later in the season.

John

Hello John -

It's great to have you in the BCF, I need more big Healey support..... I've seen you and your car appear in some of the vintage racing mags, as I always look for big Healeys in every publication I get.

I traveled it to Elkhart Lake last year for the ELVF in September and had an incredible time. We had 5 big Healeys and at least six Spridgets in our grid. I still have Lime Rock on my bucket list, but I'm already planning a trip back to Road America for the ELVF in 2014. How about getting the east coast guys to head West for a rendezvous at RA for a Healey dominated race event? It's 4-miles of racing nirvana......

I'm always trying to recruit more Healey racers, here's a great story you might enjoy:https://bringatrailer.com/2013/04/30/bat-success-story-my-name-was-in-the-logbook-from-1992/

Send me a PM and I'll send you the article I wrote for the AHC-USA magazine on my road trip to RA last year that appears in this months issue.

Here's a little in-car video I shot yesterday (Thursday) at the Jefferson 500 at Summit Point.
I am bedding in brakes and just getting my "sea legs" again (this is my first event in '13) so there there are no heroics.
This is a mixed session with some faster cars too.
If you slide to the middle of the video, I had a pretty good dice with a 1300 ALFA Spider and I eventually got by him.
This is an MGVR Focus event so there is a ton of MGs here.
We had a little rain here in the AM, but nice the rest of the day. Weekend weather looks decent.

Have to agree that John's Healey is really nice.

And since he's posting here, I'll have to bite the bullet and put those new, 7000 rpm valve springs into the MGA. Then, I might keep up.

Nice! Good times...

Dale:

Sorry I missed you. 909 ran solid all weekend.

At one point, the circlip came out of the clutch master cylinder (when does *that* ever happen?). The clutch pedal came "up" about an extra 3". It was weird to drive and a little brake fluid leaked out, but I was able to get it back together between sessions. Otherwise, no issues at all.

T&S reported me at 1:40.3 which is probably my best time ever at Summit. Not bad for old tires.

Tom Leavy (#32 red MGB) and I got the schedule mixed up on Sunday and were lounging and eating at Joisey Boyz Race Central when we heard the one minute warning for the enduro. Tom didn't even have his Nomex on. We didn't get on the track until the group was half way around on the warm up lap. Tom ended up 2nd overall and I finished 10th (out of 31) and 1st in class. We were both pleased.
