Got two of the head gasket sets, both are a THIN composite something-or-other, not the copper/steel sandwich type.

I've no confidence in the things! Any chance of finding one of the sandwich types anymore?

rare as hen's teeth -

And this is an 1800 five-main MGB, not the 1275cc.

It may be that Jason at Moss has found me a good replacement. We'll see. Meanwhile there will be a valve hand lapping party at my house. All are welcome to participate! 😁

Heck, it's just like whitewashin' a fence!

I am not a fan of composite head gaskets…had I bit of a problem with an MGA and them.
I ordered from Moss, and when it arrived the box was too small a n d you guessed it….was folded in half.
New one arrived and once fitted leaked.…into the bin it went costing me money. Never again.
Wish I was closer to help out!

That's nothing new - back in the day I ordered a special competition MGB head gasket from Special Tuning - fairy expensive. It came in a small box folded in half. The dealer was embarrassed and gave them heck but I doubt whoever was in the warehouse cared.

If this were a paying job I'd have lost my butt on it already. I should have looked at it as if it were a customer's car!
As it is, I'm my own come-back!

I wish you were closer just on general principle.

Always treat repairs as if they are not your own.

I just read (on another forum) that BPNW might have them.

Yep. Have one coming from them and one coming (thanks to Grantura_MKI) from So. California. I want to have a couple of 'em, will put together another engine as a "stand-by" unit.

Doc, my wife always asked why 2, I always pointed out the just in case. Now, with new productions makes it more necessary

Not to go down the political well too far, but the "new improved" gaskets are wafer thin, have some sort of compressible sealant on portions of the surface but don't seem to seal correctly. This one has shown evidence of coolant intruding past the seals. The head and block checked with a *Machinists* straight-edge and are in no way in need of cutting, head was torqued to spec and in correct sequence.

In short, the new "high tech" gaskets are junk, IMHO.

Totally agree. I use more gasket sealant than I ever have.

As is said before…I will not use them. They are not worth the cost to produce them! Sometimes so called progress is a big step backwards.

Check out these gems I picked up for a Talbot job.

Got a fresh can of Permatex "Copper Spray-a-Gasket" ahead of this next replacement. Shot some on the "new Improved" one just removed, to see if it would have any adverse reaction on the parent material. Seemed to stay where it was put, no evident lifting or distortion of the gasket material at least. May have to resort to that for future rebuilds. Or pay Rimmer Bros. +shipping for a six-pack of the right gaskets! :jester:

Nice!

At least the exhaust/intake gaskets in the head sets for the 1800 from Payen are still the same as before. That one sealed perfectly.

Agreed on the copper spray, as long as the ingredients are not changed or modified for cheap.

I'm hoping the formula has remained the same!! I do have a can of the older stuff but it clogs the nozzle continually...
