What is your definition of NOS?

I recently bought an air intake hose (the large one) for my Bugeye on Ebay. It was listed as NOS. What I ended up getting was a cheap plastic aftermarket pipe instead of the original heavy paper type. When I complained to the seller, he said he bought it three years ago from England, and hence was NOS. I thought NOS always meant it was a new part produced by the original manufacturer that has been around for many years. Your thoughts?

What really bugs me is the guy that has the NLA and part number in his ads making one think it's new but is indeed a used part.

Just a follow up: the seller did reimberse me under protest. All I will lose is the $10 to mail it back. He has 100% feedback and really believes his description is accurate. He has more "NOS" Bugeye parts for sale, and if anyone buys the other parts, I think he is in for more trouble. I just wanted to make sure I was being fair in my dealings with him. Thanks for your help.

Kevin,

You might have gotten a reimbersement for a genuine part. The original heater intake on the early cars was a cheap wire reinforced black pipe. The heavy paper ones are the aftermarket items. Most completely original cars have collapsed and unsightly heater intakes.

Bryan, as I remember it, the original were thin paper material with the wire imbedded inside the material. I think what Kevin bought was a PLASTIC part. Most all of the heater pipes I have seen avertised have been the plastic ones. I bought one that was very much like the original from Sports & Classics in Conn.

Yes Scott, If it was modern plastic like one of those white drier hoses, then it is not original. If it was a thin oil paper type material (for want of a better discription) then it could have been original. I didn't read well enough to see that Kevin said it was plastic. A lot of people think the heavy paper inlets are original type. The original inlets were actually pretty poor and not a lot have survived. Original NOS ones are actually pretty pricy and hard to find.

It is looking for a new home. It is just like the one that Miss Agatha is wearing and is just like an orginal as far as I know.

Your post made me feel a bit better.
Several items I purchased recently were marked
"NOS" yet had a moss part number!!!

Everyone on this board (and in the parts community)
knows what NOS means. It is just plain silly to discuss
a definition. For the parts I need on my project,
it is not unusual for me to shop for months for NOS
rather than a recently manufactured replacement part.

DO NOT ACCEPT AS NOS A RECENTLY MANUFACTURED PART!!!
