I would like to swap out the current ignition system in my 74-1/2 MGB. Which electronic ignition is best? Looking for easy installation and reliability.

I have not set a budget for the project. I have looked at some of the complete replacement units. I did not know that one could change the points out for electronic parts. Who makes these?

DNK showed you the expensive options. If it was me, I'd send your distributor in to Jeff Schlemmer at https://www.advanceddistributors.com/services07_1.htm . You'll get the best possible product and a decent price too. I suggest that you email or call Jeff who will probably suggest installing a pertronix kit in lieu of the points. If you're going to all the trouble to switch to an electronic ignition, then you should have Jeff do a rebuild since the distributor bushing will likely need replacement and the springs and weights need replacement/recalibration to get a properly performing system. Why bother going electronic if your shaft is wobbling, your advance springs are all stretched out and your vacuum diaghragm is punctured?

Crane XR700 is a good option, too.

I have the Crane on my Sprite and the 123Ignition on my Porsche. Both are good units. I like the 123Ignition a lot; no worries about misbehaving advance mechanisms.

I ordered the 123 from Europe, as the only US distributor charged $100 more.

Right now there's a long thread going on at the MG Experience forum with exactly this topic and started by Jeff. You need to check it out.

:iagree: Yup, Yup! That's what I had Jeff do and have never been sorry. I've had a new set of points in the tool bag for over 4 years now and never had to use them yet. PJ

I went this route with my Sprite (with the Hap-built hot street 1275). The B I just acquired has a Pertronic that will eventually be replaced with points. Mostly because I tend to like more period tech. I'm odd that way.

Modernistic Contrarian!! :jester:

With points, there's a whole lot less dependence on <chips> some gizmo <chips> to break down <chips> at a most inopportune time <chips>. With points, you can keep a spare iggy set in the glovebox to replace <chips> a faulty <chips> ignition in minutes, for pennies. Not so much some whizz-bang <chips> smarty-box unit.

Just an FYI for those considering 123Ignition. Remember the 123 Ignition manages the advance curve electronically. Gives four sets of four advance curves for a total of 16 selectable curves and has no springs or weights to wear out or stick. Additionally they have added a new fully programable version for those that wish to plot their own advance curves.
