What Is An Army Half Track Worth?

I've got an opportunity to purchase a WWII era half track. It runs but is currently painted a rather hideous shade of orange. The fellow who owns it now bought it from the State of Virginia where they were apparently using it to haul a core drilling rig. I really can't see any need for it but lets face it just owning the thing would be way COOL! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/thumbsup.gif

& if you don't, give me his contact info!

My dad had one when I was a kid. Bought surplus after Korea for $1200. Was great fun, just run over trees and go anywhre.

Not a very practical vehicle for the LA area, but I'd still like to have one to scare the neighborhood kids with.

It can be hugely practical in LA - This is Hollywood and they rent them out for quite a bit. I used to be part of a historic collectors group that would get hired as extras in movies, mostly military. A guy I know makes much of his living renting his vehicles to Hollywood. Several of the guys on the History Channel, Mail Bag, were part of this group. He has 1 or 2 Half-tracks, M-4 Sherman, M-5 Stuart, several Willy's Jeeps, German 88’s and British stuff. If you buy it, you should get in contact with some of the studios - they sometimes rent and ship the item where it is needed - or if they are filming in your area of the country, they know where one is. Just so they have it one record.

That kinda depends on where in L.A. you live. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Hey Tony, if your interested in this thing PM me and I'll get you some pics and contact info.

OOOH, OOOH!!! I want one! I have absoultly NO use for one, but how many people can say they have a half-track! I'd just love to drive it around just once...(gotta watch the reactions when I stop in for ice cream) then I'd have to buy some big plot of land to be able to go rumbling up through the woods whenever I feel like driving over the junker cars I had hidden out there.

You gotta buy it. Too cool.

Cliff, I just shot a History Channel show using a truck (5-ton?) full of troops and a really nice Willis jeep, both 40's/50's vintage. I wonder if it was your friend who supplied them? I can't remember his name but he was a nice guy. We shot at Corrigan Ranch in Simi Valley and at a movie ranch in Santa Clarita.

I rode around with the "troops" in the back of the covered truck for a scene but didn't get to drive in the jeep. I really wanted to though!

PM sent

I've hated that I sold my WWII jeep ever since I did!

I'd put the Dodge in it & run across country instead of on highways...what was that movie with James Garner & an old Sherman tank, "Tank", I believe?

We had a WWII Jeep at the shop I worked at.. non-syncro, straight tooth gears. Always sounded like it was in reverse... That thing was a blast

Too kewl ... personally I always wanted the M2 version - would make all those idiots who cut you off think twice /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/devilgrin.gif
