What do these symptoms sound like to you?

Hi guys - the '66 4a is fighting me. Here are the details;

1) Mixture on carb seems right at idle based in piston lift test
2) 25D with points. Advance capped at distributor and carb (yes - will fix but just want to run her around parking lot)
3) Fuel delivery looks OK - filter stays 3/4 at all times
4) The carb diaphrams were OK when I checked them and seated properly
5) I believe I set the float levels correctly
6) New battery cable with good ground
6a) 12.8 v at battery running

Symptoms
7) Will start right up from cold with choke
8) Idles great for as long as I want
9) When trying to get around said parking lot she be OK at tip in then stumble and cut out.
10) If you put the clutch and give her a lot of throttle sometimes she'll recover but usually will die.
11) Sometimes she'll not start again unless I pull the ground terminal off the battery and then push it back on

This cars wiring was hacked prior to mmy getting her.

Any ideas?

Hmmm, can you rev it OK in neutral? Choke linkage return OK? I'm wondering if it isn't running rich; have you checked the plugs? Have fun, Tom!

Here's my guess - timing is too retarded - I'd try advancing the timing followed by a run around that parking lot. If no improvement, 2nd guess - too lean - I'd run the jets up till they hit the piston, then back off at least 3 1/2 turns and test drive to check for any improvement - you can lean her down and balance later. But... got a feeling you've already tried both.

Hi Kevin - hope you are doing well.

She'll rev fine in neutral.

Choke appears OK.

I haven't pulled the plugs, will do that.

So it will rev, but won't pull a load? that tells us something, not sure what, as noted play with the timing, which if way off will kill power, also anything dragging in the driveline, brakes tranny, etc.?

Does it take a long time or little bit to warm up so that it will take throttle in neutral without missing or hesitating, if it is OK from the start right away may be too rich, if it stumbles a lot until warm may be too lean. I have never been a fan of the piston lift test, I get pretty much the same results within a very broad range of adjustment.

Skip, I hope the gas is new, this corn gas brings water into play very quickly. Might want to put some we make in the mountains of NC in the tank and if that doesn't help , put some in yours.

if everything else is good, look under the hood in the dark and see if you have fireworks around the plug wires or spark plugs, had this happen a couple times before with other cars.

you speak of timing. it has been noted that on old dampers the rubber breaks loose and the outer ring with the timing marks will move in relation to the inner hub making accurate timing adjustment impossible. you would need to bring no 1 piston to TDC and check where your timing marks are. thats the only way I know to make sure your timing marks are correct.

The fuel filter is a very poor indicator of fuel delivery. If you can't check actual pressure when it dies, then try checking delivery volume by directing a fuel line into a jar or something while you crank the engine (or have it idling).

Does the battery voltage not rise at fast idle? If not, your charging system isn't working.

Based on recent experience, I'd try a "known good" coil & condensor. I had somewhat similar problems with the TR3 that proved to be a failed coil (a Lucas Sports coil that was less than 2 years old).

Wait - to drink or use as fuel?

(tank has been drained - so don't think that is it. No separation that I can see)

Hi Kevin, thanks for checking in.

She is out at the hanger so I won't get to pick at her until the weekend.

I've been working on the 911 instead as it is in the garage. The darn thing was built by Martians if you are used to TRs.

Sounds like the problem I always had with mine. Tried all the stuff listed plus re-routing fuel lines away from heat, electric fuel pump...

I finally fixed it. EFI.
