Weld & Paint for Questions for Floor, Sill, Rocker

On my TR3, I plan on replacing the floor, sill and rockers, one side at a time wihout body bracing. I plan on jiging the three pannels (sills, floors, rockers) until a satisfactory fit is obtained. I envision drilling holes between the three panels along the edges. I would then plug weld the pannels together.

I would like to paint the individual pannels prior to jigging them. How do I treat the flanges? Do I apply weld thru primer on each flange for the entire length or can I use paint on the flange also.
I haven' t decided what paint to use for these pannels. I was considering using zero rust or an etching epoxy primer.

I believe that the sill must be welded first and then the rocker pannel is basically just a cover. The seam where the three pieces meet together should be covered with the aluminum cap anyway so I think it is alot of work to drill and weld trough the holes ....unless you are a genecologist. I have welded the three pieces at their edge and grinded the excess of weld.

No mather how you prime, the primer will be destroyed on the welding areas. I suggest you prime as much as you can before and reprime after grinding the seems.

I allways used POR-15. Good stuff.

Good luck

Below is showing a picture posted in an earlier post by Pat Gavin in another post in reference to fitting the sill. This is where the idea of welding the sill, floor and rocker was conceived.

Hi Gerry,

I'd strongly recommend you get weld through primer on all the joints/seams/inside panels that are going to be welded. I like U-Pol, nice to work with and seems to do a good job although to be fair it's only been a year since I've been using it.

Once the sill is closed back up getting an other layer of paint, POR15, or a cavity wax like Eastwood Heavy Duty Anti-Rust in there is a really good idea.
