Weber dgv for my Midget?

I've got a Nissan A15 (1500) motor in my Midget and it has a nasty old hitachi downdraft carb on it.

In a perfect world where I had enough time and money I'd figure out whether my head has round or oval ports and assemble the right intake manifold and a nice pair of SU's.

In this world I just want to bolt on something better than the hitachi and not spend too much time or money doing it.

The obvious choice is a Weber downdraft carburetor.
I'm looking for one with manual choke and it would be nice if it comes with the right adapter plate to bolt right up to my intake.

I see some on Ebay of course, new and used.
However I thought I'd ask here first and see if someone has one they want to sell, trade or donate.

Advice & comments always welcome of course!

will that fit under the bonnet?

I believe it's actually a little shorter than the Hitachi.
Hopefully it will fit - I may have to do something creative for an air filter.

They had been selling those as replacements for all kinds of cars. I had a loose throttle shaft in my Land Rover, and it was leaking a bit of fuel from there. The inspection man here in Dk didn't like leaking fuel, so I installed one of those. They claim all kinds of improvements, but the only improvement I actually saw was that it didn't drip any more. The gas mileage actually went down (very slightly).

So... just to play Devil's advocate here... why do you want to put on the Weber? What do you hope to achieve? Why do you hate the Hitachi?

Unless you have a spec sheet from someone who has set up a Weber on your EXACT motor setup, plan on spending some time and $$ (possibly $$$) trying out different chokes and jets.

(sorry mark)

The guys over there on the Datsun1200Club forums have plenty of info on setup.

I know at least one member here who has had a Weber 32/36 on a Datsun A15 motor in their LBC.

I'm looking at Ebay - but there is so very much to look through there. Overload.

What I hope to gain?
Manual choke, smooth out the running a bit.
The Hitach I have is old & tired & worn. I could get a rebuilt Hitachi, or get mine rebuilt - it seems the Weber is superior technology.

EFI really doesn't fit my budget.

I hear you Rick. The Weber is certainly newer technology than your old Hitachi. If you can install one without too much expense, then go for it.

Of course,I'm no expert! I've still got a Zenith/Stromberg on my 1500. :jester:

Stuart.

Mine either it turns out. :frown:

Actually, my opinion (take it with a pound of salt) is that you should rebuild the Hitachi and run it until you can get your SUs setup. I think your longterm happiness will be high, and your short term frustration will be low.

But I am frequently wrong.

Thanks Morris, you have a great point there.
The guys on the Datsun forum seem to say the same. I'll look into what it might take to do that, it would be nice if I could switch it to a manual choke at the same time.

In the "HELP!" section at your local big box auto supply house, they have a kit for converting early emission era water chokes to manual chokes. Cost about $15. It MIGHT work on your Hitachi.

If you are looking for a short term solution to keep you smilin' while your drivin' until you get the dream SU setup set up, the choke kit may do the trick.

Thank you, I just ordered a rebuild kit for the Hitachi.
I suppose it might run better if it were rebuilt.

I will go look for that conversion kit, that would be really helpful.

This is rich!

I went into Schucks yesterday and the nice girl comes up and asks me what I'm looking for.

There were no customers in the store and 3 employees.

I decided to give her a chance, I said "I'm looking for a conversion kit to change my automatic choke to a manual choke"

She gets a faintly puzzled look on her face and leads me over to the aisle with the chrome do-dads. She looks around there for a while without asking me any questions then makes a bee-line to the back of the store where she 'conferred' with an older and wiser co-worker.

They both come back up and say "we don't have those in the store, you would have to special order one".

I say, ah - Ok, Thanks.
They walk back to the rear of the store.

Then I walk over to the "Help" section and pick one up and carry it over to them. I told them after I buy this one they will only have one left on the shelf, so in a few years they maybe should consider ordering some more...

I just thought it was funny.
