Web Design

Hello all
I have noticed a great many forum members have constructed their own web pages. I am totally illiterate on this subject, can anyone recommend a free downloadable web design package for beginers? And what programs are popular to construct a web site?
Regards
Craig

I don't know of totally free web design sites but Yahoo! seems cheap . I bought a domain name for $1.99. I am working on nosbritishparts.com now. The tutorials will keep you busy.

I use Dreamweaver - not free, but one of the better programs. It's fairly easy to use.

I've heard good things about Dreamweaver -- again, not free but a decent program for the design work. I'm a programmer, so I do it all by hand. Free that way, but you have to know the code well.

My site is created on a PHP-based content system that I wrote. There are others out there that take most of the HTML coding out of the process. Hosting companies may offer that sort of thing.

Download Mozilla Suite, use "Composer". It's free and has the added benefit of Firefox as a browser and Thunderbird e-mail apps. Not the most "Feature Rich" HTML tool, but it works without "hiding" stuff like FrontPage and many others do.

The one slight thing Front Page has going for it is the ability on most hosts with "Front Page" extensions is that it is a little easier to publish your web page. Front page will connect to your host (if they have Front Page extensions installed) and you can make changes to your site then connect and upload (or publish) your changes directly from the Front Page program. Mind you I don't use FP, but a couple of folks who have there personal web sites here in the BCF server use it and it seems to work well for them.

FP does work very well for me, mostly because I am familiar with MS office products, and it was pre-installed on my PC, very easy to begin with although more advanced packages would have better features. It ain't bad for free.

I use Dreamweaver also. I do half GUI and half hand coding.

Long ago I tried Front Page and it really made a mess out of things. It took a long time to clean up the code.

Hi Craig,
If you want a free program, check these two sites out. ZDnet and Download.com There may be something there to your liking. Some are crippled trials, but you get to play with them before you buy.

If you're not going to build a ".com", I'd suggest you get in touch with a guy called 'Basil' at a place called the 'BritishCarForum' for hosting information....

heheee... No shoving, plenty of room fer everyone. /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/wink.gif

I like FP ease of use, but if you start making things look a certain way... they will only look that way in certain browsers. That and I've been told that FP makes the hmtl very clogged with unnecessary stuff... but that's only what I've been told.

I can host any domain here. .com, .org, it makes no difference.

Thanks very much for the info gents. I have Front Page already loaded on my computer, so I'll drive it around for a bit to see if it can handle my bungling.
DrEntropy, a friend of mine is renting a house near where I live, and stashed in the back yard under a tree is a Lotus. I don't know what model as there are no badges but it is a 4 seater. I am not familiar with this marque, but would it be worth looking into if I were to make an offer? I assume the 4 seaters are a little more collectable?
Basil, once I know what I'm talking about as far as web page design goes, I'll be asking you some questions, thanks.
Regards
Craig

This truly is a case of 'a photo can speak a thousand words'. Of course, the list of four seat Loti is not very long but still.
