WANTED: S.U. HS2 Dashpots [Midget 1275]

I am in imminent need of two good dashpots for SU HS2 carbs. I posted this in the classified section as well, but I figured I would post here as well since this forum gets a lot more traffic. Anyway, this is for my '73 Midget. An unfortunate powdercoating accident left the inside of my original dashpots with a few small particles of powdercoating, so now the pistons stick in the dashpots. I refuse to pay VB $180 for the dashpots and pistons, so if anyone has a couple of extra dashpots laying around, I could sure use them....the weather is sunny and the poor Midget is immobile! You can call me at 601-613-6351 or email at nathandarby67@hotmail.com THANKS!

The part that you are calling a dashpot is actually the suction chamber. The thing under the nut on top of the suction chamber is called a damper or sometimes a dashpot.

The piston & suction chamber are manufactured & fitted as a mating pair. It may be hard to get random chambers that will properly fit your pistons. That is why they are sold as a unit. Either too loose or too tight will screw up the carb calibration.

You might be able to carefully polish out the particles in your chambers but if you enlarge the ID of the chambers the calibration will be off.

Thanks for the reply...thats what I was afraid I was going to hear! I was wondering about how closely matched each piston/chamber pair was and if they would have to be replaced as a set. Guess they do. Removing the particles is out of the question. If you have ever tried to get powdercoating completely off of something you'll understand. I could probably get it all out, but I would most likely end up taking out some metal too, and end up with an ill-fitting piston, just as you said.

My current plan of action is to just buy a decent complete set of carbs off of ebay, and then put my needles in the "new" pistons and put those and the "new" chambers on my carb bodies. Is there anything I need to look out for in going this route? The carbs on my car were recently rebuilt and have been running sweetly, so I don't want to have to buy a set of "rebuildable" carbs and go through the trouble and expense of rebuilding and tuning them if I can at all help it.

Sounds like a good plan. Just be sure that the "new" carbs really do have the original chambers & pistons - that they are not just some miscellaneous parts that someone has stuck together to sell. It does happen. Be sure not to mix the new chambers & pistons. Often two carbs which are identical will not interchange pistons & chambers. If in doubt, try each for the best fit. Check this link for more help. Pay special attention to Section XIII. Maybe you can salvage your parts. It's worth a try.
