PC crashed, lost everything, bought new PC with Vista.

It's keen.

Anyone else running this yet?

Marvin

What do you mean by "crashed"? Was it hardware failure? If so, the operating system had nothing to do with it. If you mean the operating system will not boot, that doesn't mean you have lost any data. Regardless of the cause or of the operating system, I hope you keep your data backed up!

Sounds like the dust bunnies lay claim to yet another P.C.
I can`t count the P.C.`s I have seen die due to dust bunnies in the C.P.U. heat sink. Causing an overheating condition.
Vista Hmmmmmmmmmmm I thought about upgrading to it but .. at $300.00 for a full version I guess parts for my Tr-3 are more important to me.
NOPE: I`ll stick to xp pro for a while yet.
I even have one old pentium 300 mghz machine with win98 sp {I use for emergencys and a loaner} that still runs great. In fact I have had many offers even lately to sell it lol
Not that I ever would cause it is like a diesel, it just keeps on running, seems it`s indestructable hahahahahah.

I have a free upgrade coupon for Vista, but I don't run brand new operating systems anymore. So I don't plan to use it.

I doubt this POS i bought at circuit city will even handle it. And it's brand new.

I spent 2grand on my Dell Dimension in 1999. With a few minor upgrades, it still works and works fine. But since its on;y 450 mhz, im just running Linux.

This eMachine junk (i know it wasnt great when I bought it, but geez) has given me more issues than I care to admit. If I upgraded to vista, i might as well just set my 8 year old Dell up for dual booting into XP Pro.

Im going to wait til Vista SP1 is released before I even think about switching

Most corporate types are (finally) wary of jumping into a "new" Micro$oft O/S and have opted to wait as much as two years, as the "volunteers" (read: 'The Great Unwashed') sort out the bugs.

Again: WE'RE the Beta Testers for MS releases. "The 'WOW' starts now!" BAH! All it's gonna do is generate a hardware upgrade frenzy...

Learn to use Linux Fedora Core. Anything still running will run on a Linux O/S of some flavor. And run more reliably.

My opinion only.

BTW: Ever try to buy a pre-built machine WITHOUT an O/S??

The new compiter I bought for the GarageMahal has a coupon for a free upgrade - but, XP is doing everything I need!

Bah, I plan to avoid Vista any way I can. I'm amazed that the computer makers are already infecting their computers with it, but hey, somebody has to do the beta testing for it until service pack 1 comes out /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/whistle.gif . I'm planning to take stock of my desktop this weekend and figure out what Windows apps I need to move onto my laptop so I can purge XP off of it and have only PCLinuxOS on it. It dual boots right now, but everything works fine under Linux. Better yet, I looked at the memory statistics while I had Firefox and Amarok running, and saw that I still had 636 MB of 768 MB of memory free, and 1556 of 1556 MB of swap available. Sweet! I'd like to see XP or Vista try to do that. /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/grin.gif

Yup. My laptop came without one - just a blank HD. I run XP-PRO and have never had an OS-related problem.

Nope- don't plan to.

A bit of history- in 1995, I got a 486 100mhz (which was the fastest 486 at the time) ran it with Windows 3.1 until 2003 when, finaly, everything went goofy. I never upgraded to Windows 95, 98, ME or any other because all would take up too much space and make the thing run slower.

I now have a Sony Vaio I bought in 2003 with 1.2 ghz Celeron, 60 gig hard drive, a DVD drive and a CD-RW drive runing XP. It works great. My wife gave me Flight Simulator X for Christmas and a kickin aviator joystick.

Too graphics intensive for the machine, so a 128mb graphics card, another 256 mb RAM, and, 'cause it was cheap, an extra 120 gig hard drive, I've got something that works great. I just got a USB 2.0 upgrade card (to transfer video onto the iPod) so for about 150 bucks, I've got something that works great for me.

XP works fine, so I see no reason to overtax a system that works fine for the gee gaws I don't need.

I'm sure Vista is neat, but I don't see the need.

We've played with it a bit here at the school district, but it will be a while before we move any of our PCs to it. It's got some neat features, but nothing that is a real got-to-have as far as I've seen.

I'm a Mac/Unix guy myself, but if I had a Windows machine I wouldn't bother with it until it was time for new hardware.

Is never a good idea to be first with new software much less operating systems. They are like fine wine or good scotch, they need to age a few years.

Hi Steve,
I also have an upgrade coupon. It says I need to order Vista by the end of March. I am going to take advantage of the free upgrade and wait for SP1 to come out before I load it onto the computer.

I've already upgraded 1 of my PCs at the cave with Vista. It's "pretty", but I've seen Linux and Mac OS do ~prettier~. Aside from what the others have already said, there are only a very few reasons that I can recommend anyone to upgrade to Vista: 1) You need/want better/easier control over what off-spring see/use/do on the PC and don't want to learn Linux, 2) You have a 64-bit computer and don't want to learn Linux.

Uhmmmm... that's about it. There are a few gamers out there that think that it's the wave of the future, and switching to Vista now will give them better gaming performance, and be prepared for the coming games. Apparently, these people have short memories, because the gaming industry ~always~ takes at least a year or two before they actually release something that fully takes advantage of the newest DirectX.

There are only 2 reasons that I'm running Vista on any of my machines in the cave: 1) I need to know it inside and out for my job, 2) It's on a 64-bit Athlon and XP 64 seems to be the red-headed step child of the PC industry, and I'm ~hoping~ to get better 64-bit hardware/software support with Vista than I did with XP 64.

Yes...me too.

I am running a "Microtel" PC purchased online from Wal-Mart for $159. It came without a monitor or any real software other than "Lindows" (and calling "Lindows" an O/S is a bit of a stretch). I expunged it with a DOS floppy disk and "Format C:".
I haven't a clue what's inside the actual PC....seems to be a bunch of wires and other bits.
Because of my job, I am part of a group-license to use most Microsoft products, so I am legally running XP as a result.

By the way, I am still running a 14" monitor I bought 10 years ago. If it ain't broke....

Vista is available to me and I may give it a try after I see how it works at school.
Right now I am more interested in learning more about the latest Pro-E, Inventor, Solidworks and MasterCAM.....*those* are the kinds of software that are useful to me.

Gadzooks! Even the word e-machine makes my skin crawl. I used to hate workin on em Now I refuse. LOL
{Just a hobby anyway}
My primary machine is a 2.8 athalon 1500 mghz ram 300 gig drivespace XP Pro, run of the mill vid and snd cards. And no I havn`t moved up to 64 bit and most likely won`t I`m not a gamer. Although I have assembled a few 64 bit syst`s for friends. {Motherboard in the case and added preferials and OP sys.}

I think I remember Dos {dang cobwebs anyway.}

Del *. Cobwebs
Rem *. Cobwebs

hahahahaha.

I have to chuckle. Up until about 6 weeks ago, I was using a 14 inch Acer monitor that I got with my 1995 486. It was pre-plug and play, so when I got my new Vaio 3 years ago, I had to bring a monitor home from work to setting the resolution low enough to use with my old monitor.

Othering than losing 3/4 inch of picture on all sides, it was still working great. A colleague of mine got a new 24 inch flat panel and gave me a huge 19" CRT he had. I'm spoiled now.

I'll probably get VISTA eventually, if no other reason than to test my software on it.

The subject of the OS "appearance" came up elsewhere too. If XP works for you, you don't need Vista, but you want a different (or better) look, just try something like Window Blinds. I've been using it, and another product like it for years. There are hundreds of different styles available, and whole themes that make everything look, feel, and work differently. There are also entire VISTA themes that look identical to the screenshots on the MS website.

Here are a few examples of regular old 'XP with different looks:
<ul>[*]MAC OSX[*]"Slate"[*]Red Corvette[*]Vista[/list]

i did that for about 2 months after XP shipped. Since then I've reverted to the basic GUI with no flair. The less RAM my OS is using the better. Let's me put that extra RAM to better use with other things of more importance /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/smile.gif

Windows-blinds doesn't work like that. It's a native XP extension and doesn't load anything in memory to run during normal operation. It replaces the stock XP skinning system and (supposedly) tends to use less memory than the stock skins.

There are other programs out there that actively hack the stock GUI in memory (they used to actually rewrite the stock GUI on disc against MS's licensing) - which meant there were programs to be loaded and run to do the work.
