Valve spring compressor

A local parts and tools place has a very inexpensive compressor which looks as if it would work well, but it seems to work like the opposite of a puller, with the ends of the atrms using the sealing surface of the head.
I am concerned about scratches and damage, though I suppose if you had 10 thou taken off afterwards you would be ok?

The old kind I have used before clamped onto the face of the valve. Has anyone used this new type, and what did you think?
Simon.

I've ALWAYS used a soft piece of ~something~ (wood cut to fit, generally) as an interface when doing this no matter what configuration "tool" I had to use.
