Undercoating Removal Practice Tip

My replacement TR3 hood was covered with Asphalt Undercoating. The hood has no dents but I wanted to remove all the paint and then send it out to be lightly media blasted. How to remove the undercoating. In the Veterinary profession at our annual meetings we have a session where practioners get up and present their tricks of the trade. It is a wildly popular session and these tips can make your life much easier.

So here is mine. After using a little mineral spirits applied to the tar (a heat gun might have worked also), I used my Swiss hoof knife to quickly remove that cr*p. Took about 10 minutes. Not bad for a job that I thought would take days and make a mess that I would have to clean up for weeks.

Paul, Would a tack shop have them, or are they a specialty tool for your trade? PJ

It will increase my power to weight ratio....I removed about a pound of tar.

You should be able to find a knife at a good tack shop or feed store. I used my regular hoof knife to get in the tight spaces. They are available online, but shipping gets increases the cost. The nice thing about the knofe is you pull a thin 1/4-1/2 inch strip. Pushing or pulling a paint scraper graps to much material and you can not get through the stuff.

Thanks Paul, Living in horse country, we have a couple tack shops close by. I'm going to pick one up. For cutting tar/undercoating off, a cheap one will do fine. Thanks again for the tip. PJ

Friends of mine swear by the heat gun. A low temperature warms the tar/undercoating and then you can take it off with a paint scraper. I prefer using a plastic scraper just don't aim the heat gun at it!

BTW- What is the general opinion of what to do after the tar/undercoating is off. I am inclined to treat any light rust with rust converter and rust encapsulator and they just top coat it with a good quality paint (flat black for frame). It seems to me that this would do as well as the tar/undercoater, and is less of a mess.
