Transmission input shaft wobble

As I was prepping my center shift, four speed overdrive BJ8 transmission for paint, etc., I noticed that the input shaft wobbles a bit. Just got it back from being rebuilt. Is this normal? Seems to me that it would be hard to seal if it isn't pretty tight.

Pilot bearing will stabilize it a bit; you don't want your flywheel (or clutch disc) to rust, do you? /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif

I do not know what you call "Wobble" the shaft should deflect just a bit if you press on it but it will feel firm. However, there should be no looseness in it. If the shaft feels loose I would suspect that the front main bearing is worn or more likely, it's shims are not fitted correctly . This says that an insufficient no of shims were installed prior to buttoning up the bell housing.---Fwiw--Keoke-?

That's what I'm worried about. The play is significant, approximately 1/8 inch at the forward end of the input shaft. The deflection is 360 degrees, perpendicular to the axis of the shaft. It is also loose where the shaft exits the bellhousing towards the main case. Just doesn't seem right.

Nope Cutlass, that does not sound right to me either. I think if the rebuilder is local I would call it to his attention.---Keoke- /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/yesnod.gif

Thanks, Keoke. He is local, and we have dealt with him for years. I'm sure he will either tell me that it's normal, or he will make it right.

Not sure where you are talking about?.....But THAT type of looseness doesn't sound right.
