TR6 TR6 rear body Black paint help

As you guys know I am getting closer to painting my TR6, My question is about the black on the rear of the body, What do I use? should it be a flat urethane with a satin clear, how about black with clear and wet sanded with 3000 to dull it? should I paint the complete car with my base coat then clear coat then scuff the rear and paint the flat black? The guy at the paint store said that would work and it would protect the body better since flat paint are not very durable,

Suggestion would be appreciated

The body shop painted mine with matte black and masked it off before the clear went on the car.

I too am in the process of stripping my car for a re-paint. I had this saved for the rear paint. It comes from the Cape Cod British Car Club; TR6 Reference Document. Good Luck.

"Black paint for rear section of TR6 - "Euro Black" semi-gloss black. Early ‘70's “Boss 302” Mustangs used a similar product. Original paint code given by Triumph for the black paint to the rear panel in one of their early newsletters was ICI paint reference 062/4253. Current practice is to use a satin black rather than the matte black used by Triumph when the cars were built. Try your local NAPA and ask for Martin Senour 7244 black trim paint. It is a large spray can with a quality nozzle that dries to a nice matte black finish. And for what it's worth, they also have black chassis paint, #7243, in the same large style spray cans."

I have just finished the color and clear coating of the rear of my tub. The color and clear went over everything. When the time comes I will mask and scuff the area for the matte black. Probably PPG urethane matte black...

Ideally, Ray's method is probably best if you are painting the entire tub or car.

Dupont HOT ROD BLACK single stage paint, Won't turn chalky in the sun. Which is all we seem have in Fresno. [Wishing for rain]Hot Rod Black is not to flat, not to shiney, easy to spray.

Hondo,

A word of caution...

If you are using waterborn paint on the car you need to be carefull about doing two tone. The waterborn stuff needs to be cleared before applying any masking. If you mask directly on the waterborn without a clear coat on it, the waterborn will peel off when you remove the masking, and you will have a mess to clean up. :cryin:

This has happend to me, :wall: and also to few other people including a guy with 40 years experience in the autobody trade.

The way I'd do it, is once the car is fully painted and clear coated, mask off the area you want to blacken and then polish it with a coarse buffing compound to remove the shine, and then spray on some quality "trim black" as suggested by the guys above.

Hope this helps

Todd
