TR6 TR6, how to free the j-type OD switch from cowl?

hey! nothing in the archives about this.. anyone know the proper procedure to remove the tr6 j-type OD switch from the steering column cowl. i'm actually trying to replace the turning signal switch, but it appears the OD switch needs to be removed first to gain access to the turning signal switch (please let me know if i'm wrong on this).

many thanks, Steve

Re: TR6, how to free the j-type OD switch from cow

Steve, the black plastic covering that houses the turn signal, overdrive switch and high beam flasher is a two-piece clam shell setup that requires the top and bottom screw to be removed. This will leave the overdrive switch in the plastic housing and will come out when the two pieces are removed (held in with a large thumb nut). The turn signal is now exposed in steering column while the overdrive is away from said column.

Sounds right?

Bill, thanks for the reply. There is a 'thumb nut' that secures the od switch to the plastic housing? Are you referring to the chrome bezel looking thing at the bottom of the lever stick? Is it supposed to screw off? mine won't budge. real nervous about breaking stuff so i didn't try too too hard. -Steve

Steve, yes, that 'bezel looking thing' is it. Try some good pliers on it if it's really on tight, but insulate the jaws with a shop rag so you don't gouge them up.

There might(?) be enough slack in the wires to allow the cowls to come off without removing the OD switch from the cowl; I don't know for sure. However, in replacing any of these switches, it's usually far easier to loosen the clamp holding the steering column to the dash and then removing that "half-conduit" on the underside, where the wires run. Otherwise, it's a giant PITA to try to thread the wires of the new switch through that conduit.

I have removed that bezel using one half of a spring-type clothes pin as a drift, striking it lightly with a small hammer. The squared (bottom) end of the clothes pin was just able to catch in the notch of the bezel.

Don't try to loosen it this way with one great whang of the hammer... just tap-tap-tap and it should slowly move the bezel until it is free.
