Hi All,

Just painting the bottom of my TR3A and came across an interesting stamping while doing the painting prep. This is on the bottom of the spare tire pan.

Anyone seen this before?

That's way cool. I bet it was (is) a marking on the roll of sheet steel that was fed into the panel stamping machine. Fate left it whole on that piece so you could discover it all these years later!

A quick Wikipedia check came up with: "Several steel manufacturers in South Wales pooled their resources to form the Steel Company of Wales, to construct a modern integrated steelworks...Opened in 1951, it was fully operational by 1953. At the time of peak employment in the 1960s, the Abbey Works was Europe's largest steelworks and the largest single employer in Wales, with a labour force of 18,000."

Port Talbot is mentioned as another factory there. Can you tell if it says "Steel Company of Wales" on the top? It does have "Abby Works" and "Port Talbot" on it. Better keep that part clear-coated for historical proposes!

Seems to be etched.

I was quite amazed when it appeared. I was just doing some light media blasting in the area and it suddenly appeared. I then went into preservation mode for a couple of minutes and tried to carefully uncover more without destroying it. I was using the media blasting tip like a piece of transfer paper and pencil like in an old detective movie :smile:

BTW, the numbers 17260 are believed to be Feb 17th, 1960. I will have to dig my Heritage Certificate out to check my build date.

That's way cool! I would spray several coats of clear over it then cover it up before painting the spare tire pan. Would be a shame to cover it up. Nice find!

I agree it is cool but alas, it has been covered in paint already. I have about 20 photos of it, so that will have to do!
