TR2/3/3A TR3a Clutch Pedal Return

Dear All,

I am new and enjoyng this forum. A few days ago I purchased a 1960 TR3a, rust free, with low mileage. It shifts okay. The clutch does not slip and engages immediately. The car was in storage for about 15 years on a concrete floor. The pedal takes a long time, maybe 10 seconds, to return to the rest position. There is a spring for the return. The car shows just over 50,000 on the odometer but no way to know if that is accurate. Any ideas/suggstions on what to do and how to proceed, for the clutch pedal return will be truly appreciated.

Well, does the pedal assembly itself move freely in the small "free play" area at the top? If not, there is a heavy steel pivot bar and some brass bushings that are probably rusted and bound up.

If it does, then my next guess would be that the soft line to the clutch slave is internally collapsed and impeding fluid flow. They do fail that way sometimes, especially after long storage.

And obviously, if you haven't done it already, you are way overdue for a brake/clutch fluid change. The conventional fluid should be changed every 2-3 years, whether the car is driven or not.

As always, Randall is probably correct. I'd start with flushing the hydrolics and see if that doesn't fix it. Aside from the return spring at the transmission cross shaft, there should also be a spring at the pedal. The shaft that goes thru the brake and clutch pedals were so corroded on mine, that it was very difficult to take apart. And also that boxed in area on mine was full of sand. Once it gets cleaned and a little grease, it will move much more freely.
