Top Gear America

So, in a fit of boredom, since the current TG UK series has finished I caught up on Top Gear US from where I gave up on it in the first series. I have to say that the latest episodes have been pretty good (even though I don't want to admit it still).

I think the guys have actually allowed their real personalities into the show and it has been scripted a lot less heavily.

Is anyone else still watching?

Sorry. I've tried but I just can't do it.

I too initially thought it was trash. Now have seen it improve to become an enjoyable show. Agree that it's less scripted and there is more play off of each others personalities. Have mentioned my findings to friends and found they're pretty much in aggreement with the show's evolution to the better.

I think it's just "OK," but I can't stand it when the formula from the UK is copied so precisely (down to the interview bench and coffee table).

The formula may be copied, but the end result is no where near as good as the British version.

The American one copies the British episodes exactly. The stretched car thing? I watch the History Channel for Pawn Stars and documentaries, but never watched TGUSA.

I think if they changed the lineup to Tim Allen, Dave Chapelle and a real drive (i.e. Ricky Carmicael or Kenny Block), it would be better.

How about "Top Gear America" hosted by Larry the Cable Guy?

NO!

I think the current guys are too redneck. Did anyone watch the SPEED show "The Car Show"? That had a good lineup. They were going to cast Adam Carolla as the "Clarkson" of TGUSA before the project got shelved by NBC.

But seriously, I think the whole redneck thing needs to go. By doing that, your only appealing to people who look at a truck and think it needs to be lifted, and when they see a Civic, they think it needs a tuna can exhaust.

The magic of British Top Gear is that it appeals to everyone. Clarkson can do a review of a Bentley Continental GT and the Ford SVT Lightning, and both are funny. That's what I liked about the Car Show too. They could talk about anything and still make it interesting. The thing that makes British Top Gear so universal is that its fun for everyone, not just car people. Larry the Cable Guy or the current TGUSA guys do not have the universal appeal.

Nope. Can't watch it. Just can't reward them for making that show.

After seeing real TopGear on the actual BBC, the BBC America version has lost my interest too.

Shuks, y'all aint ev'vun sine mi Jav'va'lyn yet.

Idda be the stor uv tha sho wit'n that'un!

For me the main problem is that it's the personalities that truly drive the show... and the BBC guys are so much better. There is a wit there that the Americanized version simply doesn't have.

Aint seen it.

Huh, a Britsh format with rednecks?!?!?1

Boy, if that doesn't sound like a train wreck I don't know what does!

You are not missing anything. It is kinda like the sequel to a movie- nothing is as good as the original.

Yes, but Three's Company had four boobs, Top Gear America only has three....

Alright I rethought this a bit.
"Top Gear America"
-Larry the Cable Guy- for the rural aspect and the redneck shenanigans
-Ben Stein- Economist, more intelligent and will look at cars in a dollar/cents way
-Jeff Gordon- More performance oriented and will push a car

I think that might make a strange and unworkable cast!
