To Grease or Not to Grease

I removed my side windows and replaced the glass and am ready to re-install them. When I removed them the guides were coated with grease (which I have removed).

Question: Should I apply any grease to the nylon guides and, if so, how much and what kind?

I think a light coat of white lithium would be best.

Thanks in advance ....

Frank

I would say no to a white lithium. It will accumulate dirt and eventually cause more problems than just scratching. If you are wanting to lube, find a good dry lube that won't cause problems down the road.

I agree. Grease can be a dirt magnet/trap in this kind of mechanism. The nylon is slippery enough but you want to make sure the guides are as smooth as possible. Try cleaning all the guides with solvent. Then run some scotch bright in the tracks to make sure all is clean and smooth. If there are any dents or tight spots in the track you want to gently persuade them back to true. Then you can use a dry lube if needed.

Cheers,
John

How old was the grease that was on there? And how dirty was it? I would imagine that grease has been on one heck of a long time. I would also bet it wasn't absurdly dirty.

Bruce and all,
The grease was on for more than four years (That's how long I've had it). The surfaces are ok for their age but certainly not perfect. I think I need some lubricant but there are some good points about it accumulating dirt.

I guess I'll put a very light coat of something on the nylon guides .

It shouldn't be a big issue for me, I VERY seldom have the top and window up when I drive ...

Thanks for the advice.
