threaded rocker pedestal

Someone on a previous engine rebuild must have secured the oil feed pipe banjo bolt on my motor after the assembly was installed to the head because the pedestal threads are pretty badly stripped. I figure my choices are to buy a new pedestal (I am having the assembly rebuilt by Rocker Arm Specialists) or to put a 3/8" helicoil in the pedestal and fabricate a new banjo bolt. Since a new pedestal seems to be less expensive than the minimum charge from a machine shop I am tempted to just buy the new pedestal. However, having run into several instances where new parts do not fit properly I am hesitant. Anyone have any experience with this one? Any vendor issues of which I should be aware? If you would rather let me know off-list please do. Thanks as always.

One of the problems I had was that the banjo bolt thread was stripped, I bought a new pedastel from AH Spares, I think it was about £20 and was a great fit.

I also bought a new oil pipe at the same time and that was a dreadful fit so I did not use it.

A helicoil would be stronger than the original thread, its not many threads long.

I had the same problem as burgundyben, oil was oozing from the oil feed pipe to the pedastel, tried to tighten the union but the thread had stripped. Bought a new one from AH spares and it works fine. As a bonus, it increased my oil presure another 10 pounds.

Lin,
I agree. Thought everyone would have known this by now. Before tightening down the rocker pedestals, align the oil feed hole with the pedestal & temporarily screw in the banjo bolt to hold alignment. After the rocker shaft is in place & completely tightened down, remove the banjo bolt, attach the oil line, & carefully tighten the banjo. Final tighten the head fitting last.At least it's a cheaper mistake than some.

Thanks everyone. I ordered a new pedestal and will install carefully!
