Those darn trunk[boot] cavities

Those cavities between the trunk and fender bug me. They aren't rusty enough to replace, but I do want to stop the rust that's there. So I was thinking of soaking it with rust converter then filling it with resin. How wacko is that?

Thanks,
Walter

Walter,

Sand the rust as best as possible then use rust converter and cover that with a coat of paint (car color). Filling it with resin won't help any more than painting and painting would be cheaper.

POR-15 works very well in an area that will not be exposed to UV so it will not require a top coat. You can paint over it if you choose. It's available in white, black, silver or grey. It will get into the crevices and seal it so no new rust can form. I prefer it over the rust conversion stuff.

Yes, please don't use resin. If you have to repair it properly in the future, that would be a super huge mess to clean up.

I would say, rust converter, then a rust-preventive paint (I use Eastwood's Rust Encapsulator). Top-coat in body colour if you like.

See my other posts for similar treatment to my inner fenders and floor, with good results.

I think I'll dredge it with some One-Step by Mar-Hyde and call it good. I think it is like POR-15. It's too tight to sand, maybe a bottle type brush and the compressor.

Thanks,
Walter

Now that I look at it again........is that inner panel really necessary? What would be so wrong with cutting it out then sealing off that narrow slot? Then it could be properly prepped and painted. Two less places for rust to hide. YES, I know it won't be original!

Outside the box,
Walter

I really would like at least one opinion on this.

Yes, the inner panels are necessary. They add stuctural rigidity to the entire rear section. Including, ultimately, the rear spring attachments.
It's your car, do what you want to it.
Incidentally, the reason the round wheel arch cars were changed back to square arches was that the semi ellipic rear springs loaded the structure differently, and there was a possibility of failure.

DPO of my midget filled it with "Great Stuff" Spray foam. He also tried to use it as a glue for the rear speaker panel. Mo-ron.
