From the files of "it's never just one issue" -- got the mounts fixed, carbs back on and the thing still wasn't starting, but was on starting fluid. Spark was weak, so I changed plugs/rotor/cap/wires. Still not starting.

Opened up the fuel pump, nothing blocking, so I put it back together, and it kept leaking. Finally decided maybe the pump had always leaked a little.

Just tried an electric pump and it choked, grumbled, and finally started. After warming up, it started getting hot, so I shut her off. I lost some coolant when I changed the thermostat, so I'll have to make sure the system is full.

Also, my manual choke isn't hooked up...When I took off the carbs, it popped off, and I haven't figured out how to put it back on correctly (does anyone have a diagram or picture of a manual choke conversion as it sits at the carb?)

Have to properly wire the pump and get that choke working, then hopefully the thing didn't blow a headgasket at some point.

But at least it started!

I keep telling you, Sammy, because of the way you got that thing parked, it will never act right. You have hurt it's feelings.

Actually, I wish it was parked where it is in the picture...it has been outside in the portable garage for six months, where working on it is a pain because it's cold and wet out there. The '89 Corvette is now where the TR7 is in the picture...and I did work on that today too. (Heliacoiled the block where the intake bolt hole was stripped.)

I would also like to see the digram or picture of the manual choke coversion...mine does not look right...should there be cables to both carbs , or just the area where the auto choke was???? /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/driving.gif

Johnrip,
I finally figured it out...yesterday was 60 degrees, so I was able to stand out in the portable garage w/o freezing my figers off!
choke.jpg

So this is how it works -- it only goes to the front carb, where the auto choke was. it screws into that hole and a piston sticks out -- a tiny extension rod on a wheel pivots the piston in for choke-off and out for choke-on.

The cable is secured on a bracket, and then continues with a spring over the cable behind and connects at the bottom to a little screw/clamp which attaches to another short rod.

It makes sense when you look at it -- the long and short of it is that when you pull the interior knob, the cable is pulled, which pulls the clamp back towards the engine, which turns the knob, which pulls the piston out. Since the motion bends the spring covering the cable, the spring will bring the choke back in.

Guys, first post here, first of all i have really enjoyed this forum the last couple weeks. Great Info. On the pix there is a black piece that takes air in. My question is: If you get rid of the stock air cleaner assembly and go to the round air cleaners that fit on the 175's. What about the black intake? Anyone dealt with this? Thanks.

Good question, because mine is missing. I wonder also, where woudld you secure the oil dipstick, if the orig air cleaner is gone?

I have the black plastic assembly on mine. I believe it is the cover for the auto choke assembly on the front carb only. Not sure how it works, mine does, and as I have not been able to find any listing for any parts for it, I have taken the "dont fix it if it aint broke" policy with it.
