Tappet Tool

I don't have one of those, but I've considered it. It seems a little pricey, for a tool I probably wouldn't use more than once a year.

You have to understand, I'm a tool geek, and I can't justify its price, when compared to a short-pattern 6-point combination wrench and a short screwdriver.

It would be different if the tool had more than one (1) purpose, if lesser tools couldn't be substituted, or if I had a physical disability.

Even that fancy-dancey tool wouldn't have helped on the last Healey I adjusted the valves on; this rocker set-screw (jam nut) was so tight, I had to resort to a breaker bar to loosen it!

Note: ALWAYS use a six-point tool (wrench, or socket, if required) to loosen/tighten the jam nuts. I've seen so many cars where they've been rounded into oblivion, by open-end or 12-point tools slipping off.

Hi Randy,

I agree, it's pricey. Watch the video of the tool on the MOSS site.
The tool really makes it look easy. They probably broke the jam nuts loose before using the tool?

Thanks,
Bob

I love how they say, "It's just that fast and easy" at the end of the video. I have not found anything on these cars fast or easy except when you have it all working and you press the gas pedal! :driving:

Rich, I have found some things.. "It's just that fast and easy". Those situations simply required a check book and pen to pay the guy who did it for me.

I do agree, it's a bit pricey, but for a mechanic who does this day in and day out, may be just the ticket and well worth the cost.

Randy, is that flex loom over the heater hoses?

Watch Ebay. I got a vintage Snap-on one for 12 bucks plus 3 for shipping. I DO like it a lot and it is all real metal.

Yep I have the snap-on tool too and it is fast and easy. Sure beats the  out of a spanner and a screwdriver.---Keoke

Is it one of these? I'm not sure if it's 12mm or10mm or neither.

Anybody recall the P&G Tool for setting valve clearance. It had a crow foot which sat on the valve spring cap, a finger which went under the rocker arm and a dial indicator. You installed the gauge on the valve cap with finger under arm and tightened the adjusting screw to '0' clearance. Then turn dial indicator to '0'. Back off the adjusting screw to desired clearance reading the indicator and tighten lock nut. Very accurate as you can see impact on clearance when nut is tightened. I loaned mine to someone years ago and it developed legs - gone forever.
Regards, Bob
