Start Bugeye with KEY only - OR - KEY plus light switch on S or H?

So this morning I got out my Fluke meter and tested the ignition switch. The S and H positions work as expected, and the ignition (I) turns on when the key is on. I had previous thought that the ignition would be on only when the key is on AND the light switch is on S or H. At least that is how my car worked before I took it apart (and even before I converted to an electric fuel pump and alternator).

My owners manual says just to turn the ignition on - which I assume is just the key.

Is my experience normal? Do Bugeyes run with on the key on and not the light switch? I distinctly remember that my car would turn off if I turned off the lights or the key.

I'm curious, because this affects my new wiring harness.

I had a problem with mine in that when the key was turned it would also turn the lighting knob. "Turned" out that the hole in the center of the knob had tightened up. All I needed to do was open up the hole in the knob slightly. then all was good!

Mine does the same thing. Need to sort it out before it goes back on the car.
