Stag Stainless sill covers Triumph Stag

Dear all,

When were the stainless steel sill (rocker)covers fitted as standard to the cars? I was looking at a 1971 model with these covers fitted, but it looked like it was an aftermarket fit with sealant on both ends.

As always,
Steven

I believe all US-spec models got the bright sill covers. At least, both of mine have them, and that's what James Tayler says in Original Triumph Stag.

However, someone might well have had yours off and used sealant when re-installing. The factory didn't use any sort of sealant AFAIK, which would form a rust magnet especially in areas that salt the roads in winter.

When I removed these on my 73 Stag, the ends did have a sealant. There was no history of them ever having been removed before. There was no rust, but there was a significant amount of dirt/dust buildup.

Federal Spec Stags had them from day one, as shown in the publicity photos of LD2L, the first Federal Specification Triumph Stag displayed in fall of 1970.

Sealant was a way to keep road swarf from depositing itself between the covers and the rockers.

Also, Federal Specification Stags never had blacked out tail panels. If any Fed Spec cars have them, it was done during a respray of the car, or it was imported after 1973.

Cheers!
