speedhut speedo & tach....how did you fit them?

so along with a few other members here I decided to get a matching tach & gps speedo from speedhut.

I bought the recommended 3 3/8" size legacy guages for my '72 mgb.

I was getting ready to install them today, when I noticed on a test fitting....they don't fit in the hole. It's really close, maybe 1/8" off, but they won't go in.

my friend recommends using a dremel and very cautiously slicing into the metal backing of the dash just a little and making a cut every 1/4 inch or so, then gently pushing the cut parts inward to make room for the guages.

does that sound like the best option?

I'd initially thought to use a file and just file away until they fit but that could get ugly and take forever.

I'm not into modifying MGs but, the steel part of the dash is a little heavier than you think. Grind out the holes and forget bending anything! All you'll do is screw up the dash. Shove the gauges, what ever they are, in the bigger hole and your good to go. PJ

thanks Paul,

I'm not a big fan of modification either. I may seek out an alternative (modding the actual guage to fit)

I was thinking about using a large half-round file to just
lightly file away til it fits. It will take some time, but
I'd rather do that then hack the dashboard and have sparks
flying around everywhere.

this way the original guages will still fit just fine.
