Short-term plan [up-date!]
Before I update - For those of you who don’t remember my entire plan or want to reference to it here it is:
My long & shot term plan
Just completed the rearend half of my suspension “upgrade” to my 78B. New “lower” (-1”) leaf springs, shackles & polyurethane bushings.
Results: Well I’m somewhat surprised that the new leaf springs don’t lower the backend as much as I figured it should. Matter-a-fact I thought it was too high so I re-installed the lowering blocks until my new front coil springs arrive next week. Currently I have up-rated front coil springs with a 2” drop the new ones will have only a 1” drop and will probably look better with the 1” drop leaf springs.
Assessing the old removed parts: The leaf springs were defiantly flattened out and in dire need of replacement. Likewise the old shackles where somewhat bent and distorted. But the biggest surprise was the condition of the old rubber bushings. The front eye spring bushes seemed ok but the leaf spring pads were hard and brittle. While the rear shackle bushes were very distorted and somewhat compressed to one side or the other.
The condition of the old rear bushes, hardware, shackles and leaf springs were definitely contributing to the rubbing of the rear tires in the wheel well in heavy cornering, dips & speed bumps. Glade I took care of this when I did.
What’s on tap for next week?
The front-end: New Brake slotted/cross-drilled rotors & up-rated pads. As well as replacing all of the rubber bushings with polyurethane and replaceing the steering rack boots.
