shock fluid

Just finished installing two rebuilt stub axle/kingpin assemblies on my 75 b. Not a hard job but a bit pricey! I also removed and cleaned up the shocks. I was wondering what is the best type of fluid to put in the shocks for a good handling but not overly harsh ride?

I've heard people use motorcycle shock oil or mineral oil, but haven't had to do mine, so have no first-hand knowledge.

Hi,

If you follow the recommendation of the Bentley Workshop manual, it recommends to use Armstrong Super (Thin) Shock absorber Fluid No. 624 or any good quality mineral oil to specification SAE 20W. It also mentions that the 20W mineral oil is not suitable for low temperature opration, but does not define "low temperature".

I've used: hydraulic jack oil, motorcycle fork oil, and 15 weight motor oil. They all seem to work equally well.
The Motorcycle fork oil has the side-benefit of having seal-sweller additive, which helped my shock leak less fluid. It's also the most expensive. But a quart of oil will last you a very long time.
After a few years of maintaining leaky front shocks, I finally replaced them.

I use 20wt motorcycle shock oil and have been pleased with it.

I have had good results with mineral oil. If it was empty recheck after riding awhile or disconnect shock and work up and down to make sure all the bubbles are out.
