School me in the new ways

The last time I purchased parts for my BJ8 was the early 1980s. I dont want start a fight about my vendor is better than your vendor; however when I posted about some furflex a couple of weeks ago I was informed of other vendors I didnt even know existed that sold superior products( constructed more like the original ); that got me thinking.... I now want to purchase splined hubs ( something that has a bit of a safety factor for my family ) I have gone to the catalogs of the two bigger vendors that I used way back when and see a fairly substantial difference in price. As anyone I want the best I can get for safety but how in the world can someone be sure he is getting the best bang for the buck? By that I mean possible superior construction for less money. Parts werent made in places like China and the materials were more like the the original equipment back then. The manufacturing world has changed quite a bit in 30 years!!I know that sometimes technology can make better products (such as rust fighting and heat fighting products) but for hard parts it can be different and the manufactuer is trying to cut costs on a small market. I try to do as much reasearch as possible but one can get paranoid about buying.

I suggest purchasig parts from suppliers that also do Healey restorations like " Healey Surgeons" .

-Thank goodness

I purchase a lot of my parts from the smaller independent suppliers such as BCS, British Car Specialist. They actually "called" me about the brake and clutch masters "MOSS recall". They also restore Healeys and use the parts they sell. There's a problem with "fit" of the reproduced rear spline hubs that I wasn't aware of and it's also the reason the correct ones cost more. "fit" is everything! Most smaller shops get their parts from the large suppliers, manufactures so they seem to know what fits and works faster. Everyone has their favorite suppliers and fortunately there are enough of them. Personal attention and great customer service is essential when you're doing your Healey!!

Healey Surgeouns..they have to use the parts they sell.

Also had not bought parts since the 80's when I was restoring my BJ8. When I bought my 50% finished 100 8 years ago was glad that Healey Surgeouns was still around.

BCS is a Moss distributor and most of their parts do come from Moss. They even get AHspares parts through Moss. When I order something from them I have learned to ask the source. Not that it is a bad thing, its just that if I've sent a part back to Moss, I don't want BCS to send me the same thing again.
My biggest complaint with Moss is the shipping charges. I ordered $23.00 worth of parts weighing 3.5 oz. The shipping was almost another $10.00. Their invoice said 1 pound 5 oz. It came in a bubble pack envelope.

Not in defense of Moss, but it does cost companies $$ to pull the part in labor, package it and ship it. The part also cost them $ to begin with and when they receive it they have to place it in stock. And you do have to pay someone to process the order.

Comparing a $23 part vs $10 shipping/handling might seem like a lot of markup, but if the part you ordered was $200 and was also 1.5 lbs. it still would probably cost the same to ship. I try to work up an order of several items instead of one or two when I place my orders and have even split shipping costs with fellow local club members when we order and have stuff shipped to one of our houses.

Now, about those 4 brand new BJ8 lower radiator hoses....
